State Election Commission declares VC el | AGARTALA, Jan 27 (TIWN / IANS) Polls to 587 village committees in Tripura would be held on February 24, the state election commission announced on Wednesday.The village committees, falling in areas under the politically important Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), are equivalent to gram panchayats outside the council areas.State Election Commissioner G. Kameswara Rao told the media that elections for the 4,597 seats would be held on February 24.Of the total seats, 4,018 are reserved for tribals, 180 for people from Scheduled Castes and 2,005 for women."Instead of Electronic Voting Machines, ballot boxes would be used for the polls. This is being done, according to the election laws of the TTAADC," said Rao, who was earlier the state chief secretary.G.K.Rao said that in all 768,404 people, including 379,112 women, were eligible to cast their votes. The Airport expansion work may take a lift in next few months, said Governor Tathagata Roy. He also said that Agartala Airport would soon be upgraded to an International Airport to facilitate better communication. It is to be mentioned here that After the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) had given clearance to the plan of setting up new terminal building at Agartala Airport, the work is now underway. Centre alerts Northeast over terror atta | AGARTALA / AIZAL, Jan 25 (TIWN / IANS) The central government has alerted the northeastern states over possible terror attacks ahead of the Republic Day on Tuesday, a police official said on Monday. "The home ministry has alerted the northeastern states to maintain strict vigil in the run up to the Republic Day," Tripura Police spokesman Uttam Bhowmik told IANS. The Border Security Force (BSF) has also been told to further strengthen vigilance along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent trans-border movement of militants," he said. Security forces have been searching airports, hotels, bus and railway terminals as well as major markets across the region for possible hidden bombs. Four northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Assam - share an 1,880-km border with Bangladesh. India and Bhutan share a 643-km unfenced border. Four states - Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh - also have a 1,640-km unfenced border with Myanmar. And Arunachal Pradesh has an 1,080-km unfenced border with China. Several separatist outfits have called for a 24-hour general strike from January 25 midnight and a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations. The Northeast Frontier Railway has taken up security measures regarding rail traffic in southern Assam and elsewhere in the northeast.An official of the Airports Authority of India said entry of people, except passengers, into airports across the northeast had been barred. The restrictions would continue till January 29. Talking to TIWN correspondent, SP Bijoy Nag said that there is no major threat of militants in the state ahead of the republic day celebrations. Security measures have been taken after reviewing different security aspects. Special emphasis is being given to bus terminuses, public transports and congested markets with sniffer dogs and bomb squads pressed into service, added Nag. He also said that Tripura police was actively coordinating with the Central forces, mainly the Border Security Force, to enhance the security on the Bangladesh border to quell threats from extremist groups who also announced a general strike on January 26.
