AGARTALA, Jan 25 (TIWN): A district level sensitisation programme on “Prevention of Crime against women and HIV/AIDS among women†was held at TB Association Hall on Monday.
The programme was organised by Tripura commission for women jointly with Tripura AIDS control society.
However, the program was presided by Purnima Roy, chairperson for Tripura commission for women.
Addressing the program, Purnima Roy, chairperson for Tripura commission for women said that Violence against women and girls is rooted in gender-based discrimination and social norms and gender stereotypes that perpetuate such violence. Given the devastating effect violence has on women, efforts have mainly focused on responses and services for survivors. However, the best way to end violence against women and girls is to prevent it from happening in the first place by addressing its root and structural causes.
She also said that Prevention should start early in life, by educating and working with young boys and girls promoting respectful relationships and gender equality. Working with youth is a “best bet” for faster, sustained progress on preventing and eradicating gender-based violence. While public policies and interventions often overlook this stage of life, it is a critical time when values and norms around gender equality are forged.
However, throwing light on the prevention of HIV/AIDS Subrajit Bhattacahrjee Assistant Director Tripura AIDS control society said that there's no vaccine to prevent HIV infection and no cure for AIDS. But it's possible to protect yourself and others from infection. That means educating yourself about HIV and avoiding any behaviour that allows HIV-infected fluids including blood, semen, and breast milk, into your body.
Further a presentation was also screened on free Legal aid and services by Aparna Dey, member secretary, TCW.
