AGARTALA, Jan 25 (TIWN): Along with the nation, the State on Monday observed the National Voters' Day (NVD) at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan.
To mark the celebration, a programme has been inaugurated by Governor Tathagata Roy in the presence of District Magistrate of West Millindh Ramteke, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Manik Lal Das and others ar Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan.
The day is being observed aiming to encourage the youths of the nation to take part in the political process.
During the programme, newly enrolled voters were distributed with voter Id card.
However, along with the State, the day has been celebrated in all the centres, Blocks, Sub-divisions, and Districts.
The celebration has started from the year 2011.
A meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, approved a Law Ministry proposal to this effect, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni told reporters.
The initiatives has been taken observing less interest among the new voters who have attained the age of 18 years in getting enrolled in the electoral rolls she said the level of their enrolment was as low as 20 to 25 per cent in certain cases.
The National Voters' Day is also utilised to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process.
The Election Commission of India was established on January 25, 1950. Election Commission of India is an autonomous constitutional authority responsible for administering election processes to Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, state legislatures and the offices of the President and Vice President in India.
Every year the day is being celebrated with great enthusiasm in order to create awareness among the youth to participate in the political purpose and to enrol their name and to utilize the right to vote.
However, the main objective of the programme is also to increase enrolment of voters.
