Power situation grim in Tripura: Palatan | AGARTALA, June 21 (TIWN): OTPC 726 MW Power project, Tripura's pride, which is also a signature Project of North Eastern Region with largest investment of Rs. 10,000 crores, but the irony is such that till date the OTPC Palatana power plant has failed to make Tripura a load-shedding free State. Due to problems of either its Unit-I or the Unit-II shutdown under ‘emergency’ frequently, OTPC power was unreliable. “The Unit-I of the OTPC is recently undergoing emergency shutdown,†informed OTPC Managing Director Satyajit Ganguly. When TIWN contacted over phone, Ganguly refused to talk, instead asked to make contact with him only via e-mail. Following this when TIWN later asked the status of the present power generation of OTPC, Ganguly managed to reply, “The Unit-I is under emergency shut-down, whereas the Unit-II is generating as per schedule in the order of 350MW.â€â€œPlease appreciate that as per IEGC, the generation is scheduled for the Station and not Unit-wise,†Ganguly, the MD of the OTPC who often have a tendency to contradict the factual media reports said, this in his statement. OTPC MD explained TIWN, “The emergency shutdown of Unit I was to replace the transformer bushing of HV side of Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine in line with recommendation of EPC Contractor. Tripura to get luxury Volvo buses for Ag | AGARTALA, June 21 (TIWN): Despite all odds and with an aim to meet the demand of the land-locked Tripura and to contain the rise in airfares the Tripura Left front government has at last decided to procure the proposal of purchasing luxury buses for the Agartala-Kolkata route via Bangladesh capital Dhaka. Tripura is all set to kick off the commercial service between Agartala and Kolkata and vice versa very soon, while the West Bengal Government has already started its commercial service successfully. The bus fare has been fixed at Rs. 2000 for Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala route.Talking to the reporters here at the civil secretariat, State Transport secretary Samarjit Bhowmik, who has witnessed several historical momentum of the Tripura left front Government under his career said, “We have planned to purchase at least two international Volvo buses to ply at Agartala-Dhaka-Kolkata and vice versa route.â€â€œThe buses would reach here at the state by 40 to 45 days and later we would start our direct bus services from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka,†Adding Bhowmik said, “We are buying those international standard Volvo buses with an aim for comfort of Tripura passengers.†The introduction of Volvo buses however has of course triggered a question now among the drivers who would be entrusted to drive the Volvo bus, also questions about maintenance as no Volvo maintenance exist in Tripura. | 20-Jun-2015 |

High Court issues notice to principals o | AGARTALA, June 19 (TIWN): Responding to another public notice before the bench of Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice U. B. Saha, the Tripura High Court on Friday issued notice, directed the principals of a total of 15 private institutions of the state to check the rampant private tuition by a section of teachers of their school. HC issued notice has mentioned that unscrupulous teachers force students to attend tuition, otherwise they are not given proper marks in school. This cannot be permitted to go on, mentioned HC. The court cleared that when the names of other schools come into its notice then the court shall expand the scope of this litigation and issue notices and any person who is interested in the matter can intervene and either support the case of the petitioner or oppose it. However, this writ petition has been registered on the basis of a letter written by the petitioner. Keeping in view the nature of the allegations made, the same has been directed to be treated as a public interest litigation. The teachers, day in and day out are engaged in private tuitions, charging huge fees. It is alleged that these teachers do not spend sufficient time teaching in schools but virtually coerce the students to attend the tuition classes, whereas Article 21A of the Constitution of India has granted a fundamental right to every child between the ages of 6 to 14 to get free education. The court also stated that even the Government of Tripura had issued circulars to stop private tuitions, one of which was issued in April, 2011 prohibiting tuitions but unfortunately this circular limits itself to primary school teachers. | 19-Jun-2015 |
Kamalasagar Indo-Bangla border haat fume | AGARTALA, June 19 (TIWN): For the second of its kind in Tripura the border haat set up at Kamalasagar-Tarapur bordering area opened from June 11 this year. The haat was scheduled to be opened every Thursday i.e. once in a week, but interestingly on the second day of the border haat at Kamalasagar several vendors and the vendees were injured after the concerned BSF securities allegedly attacked and harassed them restricting their way towards the haat. As a result only 5 vendors at border haat were seen at the haat whereas a total of 15 vendors from Bangladesh showcased their products for selling. The deprived vendors and the vendees alleged that the BSFs acting on behest of the concerned smugglers had harassed them and stopped their way towards entering the haat. The incident has triggered a huge resentment among the locals on June 18.According to the highly placed source, the concerned officials along the BSF authorities on Friday had held a meeting taking a stock of the situation that occurred on Thursday. The decision of the meeting has not been reported however. but the source also added that a report has been tabled with ADM, Sepahijala ADM, who is also the Chairman of the Border haat committee and also with the DM (Sepahijala). Agartala-Akhaura rail project gets green | AGARTALA, June 19 (TIWN): With a bid to break the deadlock over the proposed India-Bangladesh railway project the National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog was held on Thursday at New Delhi under the chairmanship of Dr. Manoj Singh (Advisor), Transport. After several persuasions the meeting managed to issue a green signal to the 15-km Agartala-Akhaura rail project along Tripura. Meeting on Thursday has planned to commission Agartala-Akhaura rail line by 2017, said the Transport officials on Thursday. A team of Ministry of Railways would visit here at the state this month to take a stock of the situation and is expected to prepare a report on the proposed project and would submit it to the Railways Board.However, the meeting held on Thursday at New Delhi has decided to lay an overhead rail line from Badharghat rail station towards Agartala-Akhaura rail line covering a total of 2.5 km amongst the 5 km total run from Indian side. The rest 2.5 km would be rail line would be laid on surface.This has been planned with an aim to cut the estimated cost. Earlier Rs. 302 crore was demanded to acquire around 98 acres of land in India for laying the tracks. 64.64 km remained unfenced along Indo-Ba | AGARTALA, June 19 (TIWN): Just after the Central Home Ministry has sounded red alert across the entire North-East India against the backdrop of the Indian army’s operation at Myanmar, the Border Security Forces were recently asked to intensify its vigil along the Indo-Bangla border here in Tripura. A review meeting held recently at the secretariat Chief Minister Manik Sarkar after lifting the Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) from the state has asked the BSF authority to tighten up their vigilance along the bordering areas with an aim to restrict insurgency movements.During the review meeting it has been learnt that a total of 64.64 km still remined unfenced along the Indo-Bangla border here in Tripura. The land swapagreement envisages transfer of 111 enclaves with a total area of 17,160.63 acres to Bangladesh, while Dhaka is to transfer 51 enclaves with an area of 7,110.02 acres to India. A 6.1-km undefined border stretch will be demarcated. NRHM multi-crore scam: 5 accused CMOs tr | AGARTALA, June 18 (TIWN): With the department displeased over the role of police on National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) multi-crore scam at Kailasahar under Unakoti District investigation, the supporters of the accused CMOs and other medical officers are on a spree pressurizing police to close the chapter and rescue the accused officials from the multi-crore scam. On being asked why the accused CMOs have not yet been arrested, the highly placed source of state health department said, “The case is entirely under the vigilance of High Court and the department has already handed over the case with the police.†However the official source expressing displeasure over the role of police quoted, “If the police manage to release the accused persons after investigation then it is their problem. We have done from our part by framing the audit report and filing case against 17 medical officers for their involvement in NHM multi-crore scam. â€Interestingly, during the interaction with the official source, it has been learnt that at least five accused officials has already been issued with a transfer order. The source also added that the Kailasahar NRHM Director Dr. Sandeep Mahatme is also likely to be transferred soon, which some way or other help the police investigation to droop and free police from the case.
