“Legal awareness must reach the remotest corners of country”: Supreme Court Justice T S Thakur

AGARTALA, June 21 (TIWN): Saying that the legal awareness need to be reached to the remotest areas of the country including the land-locked Tripura Supreme Court Judge T S Thakur on Saturday addressing his key note address during the during the programme on ‘symposium of harnessing youth power to spread legal awareness’ at Agartala said, “At least 40 per cent of the total population of the country are deprived from their basic needs and several basic opportunities.” Justice Thakur adding to that said that a large part of the tribal communities are major in this segment who are still deprived from their rights.“Our motive is to make justice reach out to the poorest of the poor and women of the society as well, who have been deprived of it for so many years,” Thakur added.

The programme on symposium of harnessing youth power to spread legal awareness was organised by the Tripura State Legal Service Authority on Saturday at Agartala Rabindra Bhawan. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar along with SC Judge T S Thakur, Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta, Justice U B Saha and other delegates jointly inaugurated the programme.

Thakur said, “Just as the Judges are engaged to their duty to give justice to the people also the Chief Ministers should always give Justice to his state.” Adding to that Thakur also said that Spreading awareness must be a major challenge for every one of us. It also becomes a challenge for the present generation of the youths including the school students.

Besides, Tripura High Court Chief Justice Deepak Gupta addressing his welcome address said, “At least 86 per cent of the tribal people of the state are not aware the legal aid programme that are being held in Tripura,” adding to that Gupta also said that they are also not aware of their rights.

He said, “The rule of law not only to be discussed in the court but also should be discussed at each and every part our life.”

“Tripura has a very high literacy rate but does not turn into legal knowledge,” said HC CJ Deepak Gupta. However, later addressing his key note to the programme on Saturday at Agartala Rabindra Bhawan urged that the students and the young lawyers must come forward and join spreading the legal awareness.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar later addressing his speech said, “We cannot think of law without life, society and civilisation.” Adding to that Sarkar said that law which cannot be made or framed is inseparable and interlinked with life, society and civilisation.

However, SC Judge who is also the Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Justice TS Thakur has arrived here in the state and was welcomed by the HC bar association members at Agartala HC. Later he attended the programme organised by the state legal service authority at Agartala Rabindra Bhawan.

T.S. Thakur (born 4 January 1952) is a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He is a former acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court and later took over as Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court, after which he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on 17.11.2009.
