India-Bangladesh ties have entered new p | AGARTALA / DHAKA, June 8 (TIWN): India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina on Sunday noted that India-Bangladesh ties have entered a new phase with a "pragmatic, mature and practical approach" and both reaffirmed their commitment to cooperate in tackling extremism and terrorism and not to allow their territory for any activity inimical to the other.According to an exhaustive joint statement issued by both countries on Sunday, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in the fields of energy, trade and connectivity.Indian government’s extending a $2 billion line of credit to Bangladesh is expected to create 50,000 jobs for Indians and provide a big boost to the government’s Make in India drive. A line of credit is a promise to provide loans at subsidized rates from agencies such as Exim Bank. Bangladesh signed a pact to sell off its unused submarine Internet bandwidth to India's state owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) for $ 1.2 million ( Rs 7.7 crores) a year. The agreement will be for four years and India will gain 10 Gbps (gigabits per second) bandwidth in the first year with a provision for this to go up to 40 Gbps per second in the subsequent years. Bhanu’s ministry stands mere spec | AGARTALA, June 8 (TIWN): The lame duck ministry of Food and Civil Supply led by State Finance minister Bhanu Lal Saha is standing a mere spectator as lakhs of public money is looted by the LPG distributors throughout the state.The looting of people’s money by the LPG distributors is continuing ever since the price of domestic LPG cylinder was raised to Rs. 737.50 per cylinder by the public sector company Indian Oil in April this year. LPG consumers of the state are helplessly buying the domestic LPG cylinders at Rs. 740 per cylinder from the LPG distributors as the people have no option but to pay extra Rs. 2.50 per cylinder to the distributors. The agencies are pocketing the extra Rs. 2.50 per cylinder giving excuse of the insufficiency of the Rs. 1, Rs. 2, and 50 paise coins.The distribution of LPG cylinders, which comes under the ministry of Food and Civil Supply is going on unchecked by the department of food and civil supply leading to the corrupt practices of the distributors. Bru refugees reluctant to go back unless | AGARTALA, June 7 (TIWN): As expected, none of the Reang refugees, camping at Tripura Dhamcharra Kaskau relief camp, in North District who called themselves as ‘bru’ turned up for the identification process, which ended on June 5, with the Mizoram officials went back empty handed from Tripura. A team of Mizoram government has arrived at Kasko relief camp and began the identification of Bru refugees from June 2. However, another identification process would begin from July 13 at Kanchanpur. During the four days of identification and verification process at Kaskau relief camp, none of the refugees camping there turned up for identification, said official. Asked about the reason behind this, the official at Dhamcharra said, “When the identification process had begun on June 2, the leaders of the bru refugees have asked the refugees not to show up to Kasko camp for identification unless their demands are met by Mizoram government.†As per earlier tripartite talks between Mizoram Government, Mizoram Bru Displaced People's Forum (MBDPF) and Tripura Government, identification of bona fide residents of Mizoram for repatriation started at the Kaskau camp from June 2, but not a single family turned up. However, despite all out efforts, repartition of Bru refugees, sheltered in six relief camps in Kanchanpur subdivision, have been virtually derailed once again. The Central government has already offered a rehabilitation package to those refugee families who want to return to Mizoram. Under the package, a one-time grant of Rs. 85000 to each family will be given, alongwith free ration for two years after repartition process. Prolonged dry spell and increase of peak hour demand, Tripura has been facing a serious crisis of power for past few years.Making several promises before and after the installation of the biggest gas based power plant at Palatana, today the condition of the state in distribution of power runs under embarrassment as Palatana Unit I was inaugurated by President Pranab Mukherjee and Unit -II by Prime Minister Narnedra Modi.After the installation of Palatana power plant several other power plants like The NEEPCO Monarchak Power plant, Rukhia power generation plant and other Power plants, the problem is persisting even today. As a result the entire state is being badly hit due to the power crisis and load shedding.Power crisis has come to limelight with the TSECL is allegedly reluctant to buy additional power from the Palatana power plant as well as from Monarchak power plant and due to this, power shortage has hit the state in summer's peak season. Bangladesh-India bilateral 14 MoUs, 22 i | DHAKA / AGARTALA, June 7 (TIWN):Indian prime minister Narendra Modi emphasized on multiple transit facilities but set aside the issue of sharing waters of the river Teesta.
The two countries signed and exchanged 22 instruments, including four agreements, three protocols, 14 Memorandums of Understanding(MoU) and one letter of consent on various matters on the first day of the visit.Modi, like former Indian prime ministers and dignitaries, renewed the pledge for signing the much expected agreement on Teesta water. ‘Connectivity by road, rail, rivers, sea, transmission lines, petroleum pipelines and digital links will increase,’ Modi said at a joint press briefing at the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka on Saturday evening.
‘Bangladesh’s decision to allow transit of power equipment and foodgrain to the Northeast (of India) echoes the strength of your (Bangladesh) human values and our shared economic opportunities,’ he said.
With the support of state governments in India, he said, ‘We can reach a fair solution on Teesta and Feni rivers’.
Separate agreements and relevant protocols were also signed on operation of passenger bus services between Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati and Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala.
Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company Limited and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited signed an agreement for leasing of International Bandwidth for internet by Bangladesh at Akhaura.
A protocol on inland waterways transit and trade and a MoU on use of Chittagong and Mongla seaports were also signed.
The two sides signed a MoU for extending a new line of credit worth $2 billion to Bangladesh by India.

A deal on Teesta water sharing remains beyond reach in his first year of office though it is his charisma that helped solving 41-year-old land boundary issue. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been seen as the main stumbling block for getting the Teesta water sharing deal inked.

India, Bangladesh ratify historic land s | DHAKA / TIWN, June 7 (TIWN): In a historic move, India and Bangladesh on Saturday ratified an over 40-year-old land border swap agreement and flagged off two new trans-border buses as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart Sheikh Hasina and announced a $2 billion Line of Credit to Dhaka.Both countries also inked 22 agreements, including renewing a bilateral trade agreement, an agreement on coastal shipping, on using of the Chittagong and Mongla ports, and prevention of smuggling and circulation of fake currency notes.Bangladesh also inked two MoUs with Adani Power Limited and Reliance Group to set up 4,600 MW power plants in the country.The deals worth $5.5 billion were inked by Power Development Board of Bangladesh and the Indian companies at the Bidyut Bhaban in Dhaka.Adani Power is to invest $2.5 billion to set up a coal-based power plant with capacity of 1,600 MW while Reliance Group is to set up an imported Liquefied Natural Gas-based power plant with 3,000 MW capacity at a cost of $3 billion.The sites for setting up the plants are yet to be decided.Earlier, Modi along with Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee flagged off the Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati bus services. | 06-Jun-2015 |

Historical LBA documents exchanged, Modi | DHAKA / AGARTALA, June 6 (TIWN): In a landmark move, two neighboring countries India and Bangladesh have exchanged the documents of the ratification of Land Boundary Agreement to implement the transfer of enclaves which will kick start the process of implementing the 41-year old deal, ending stateless lives of more than 50,000 people in 161 enclaves on both sides of the border.Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s prime minister Sheikh Hasina oversaw a signing session of the historic Land boundary agreement on Saturday afternoon.
Both the prime ministers have been in an exclusive meeting at 4:30pm to discuss various bilateral issues at the Prime Minister’s Office in the city.
 Prime minister of India is currently on a 2-day trip to Bangladesh.The historic LBA document has signed today at Dhaka. Indian Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar and Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque have signed the protocol on Saturday to exchange the ratification before Prime ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina.They also exchanged the modalities of implementing the deal after the signing.West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also witnessed the signing of LBA agreement. They flagged off three buses to Kolkata, Agartala and Shillong at around 3:45pm.
Hasina, Modi and Mamata got board on three buses and exchanged pleasantries with passengers.
Mamata handed over a Kolkata-Dhaka symbolic bus ticket to Sheikh Hasina while Modi handed over Agartala-Dhaka bus ticket to the Bangladesh prime minister before launching the Bangladesh-India bus service.
