ONGC yet to get environmental clearance | AGARTALA, June 23 (TIWN): The three giant gas reserves found in the Trishna Wildlife Sanctuary of southern Tripura during the year 2000 would be explored very soon after the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) Tripura Asset receive the environmental clearance which has hit the gas exploration for the past 15 years. However, talking to TIWN on Tuesday ONGC Director Onshore V P Mahawar said that soon the exploration at those wells would be carried. He said the agencies are fixed to undertake the gas exploration at those wells. “We are on the job, but have to move forward according to the procedure,†Mahawar adding, said that the ONGC had already taken up advance action towards the immediate drilling of those three wells at Trishna sanctuary.“We did not get the forest and environment clearance yet now due to cumbersome procedures," said Mahawar. Adding to that he said “It would take another short period of time as the Prime Minister level committee is already in agreement with the issue of the gas exploration at Trishna Sanctuary.â€Mahawar said, “As per law and the apex court direction, no mining work can be done in the wildlife sanctuary without proper sanction, but it is to mention that the ONGC would not carry any kind of mining at the sanctuary in Trishna as this would damage the present ecological balance.†| 23-Jun-2015 |
Tripura to get 2 elephant conservation r | AGARTALA, June 23 (TIWN): Tripura to have two elephant conservation reserves at Gandhari near Udaipur subdivision of South Tripura and at Atharomura hill ranges, between Teliamura and Ambassa subdivisions of West Tripura and Dhalai districts. The Tripura government is working on a comprehensive plan to establish the two jumbo reserves here in Tripura, said State Minister for Forest Naresh Jamatia recently to the reporters.Elephants, once an integral part of Tripura’s history, have dwindled in number along with the state’s once-rich forest cover. At present, the number is only 58 whereas a total of 2, 013 cubs were reported recentlky, according to State Chief Wildlife Warden Dr. A K Gupta.However talking to the reporters here at the civil secretariat Minister said, “We have recently send a proposal to the Union Ministry for setting up the reserves here in Tripura†adding to that he said, “Rs. 10 crore landscape approach was send this year to the central ministry.â€The state government is opening two elephant conservation centres to save the animals from total extinction. Tripura High Court seeks status report | AGARTALA, June 23 (TIWN): With an aim to save ‘flaura and fauna’ the Tripura High Court under the division bench of Chief Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Subhashish Talapatra on Monday ordered the State Principal Secretary and Chief Secretary to submit the recent status report of the Tripura Matabari Kalyansagar Lake through affidavit within two weeks. Talking to TIWN in this regard Lawyer Kalyani Ray said, “After hearing the videography and the recent photography of the Kalyansagar lake the HC seeks the status report of lake.â€Ray said, “After being asked by the court we have submitted the status report of the lake along with the rejoinder, following which the court on Monday asked the PC and the CS to submit the report if the state government has demolished the artificial cemented embankments or if they have not yet to save the rare species of the turtles in the lake.†Ray also added, “Chief Justice Deepak Gupta while issuing order to the state government had clearly stated that the aim must be to save the falura and fauna of the historical lake and also to restrict the problems of the breeding of the rare species of Bostami turtles.â€Adding to that lawyer Kalyani Ray said, “In the recent status it has been found that the state government has not taken any sincere initiatives to break fully the cemented embankments of the lake so far to set up a breeding ground for the turtles in the lake.†Only partial embankments were demolished which did not solve problems with bostami turtles natural breeding grounds. | 23-Jun-2015 |

Controversial Border haat at Kamalasagar | AGARTALA, June 22 (TIWN): Tripura’s 2nd Border Haat at Kamalasagar under Sephaijala District had erupted in controversy with its functioning on the second day of the haat or market. The incident occurred on June 18 after the unruly custom authorities alongwith the BSF security forces allegedly restricted a section of traders from entering the haat despite they had a valid pass with them on the second day of the haat at Kamalasagar. However due to this untoward incident, on Monday Sephaijala Additional District Magistrate (ADM), who is also the committee chairman of the border haat held a ‘jumbo’ meeting with the all the concerned officials eyeing to restrict further disturbances at the haat. The most prominent temple of Tripura, the Tripura Sundari temple’s Lake Kalyan Sagar is famous all over India for the collection of its rare Bostami turtles and various kinds of fishes. But the extinctions of its tortoises have become a very common and an old issue, for which the Government doesn’t care anymore.Talking to TIWN correspondent on Monday, Udaipur SDM Ajit Debnath stated that various steps have been taken already to save the fishes and tortoises. According to him the administration has broken one side of the cement embankment of the Kalyan Sagar Lake and has arranged a temporary measure with sack of mud to preserve the livelihood of the tortoise especially for their breeding of off-spring.Interestingly, years have passed that the administration has adopted this step but so far there is no full-fledged report of any re-production of tortoise in the bank of the kalyan sagar.
