Badarpur-Agartala BG conversion to compl | AGARTALA, July 18 (TIWN): Broad Gauge (BG) conversion work from Badarpur to Agartala is expected to kick off from October this year following which the train services in Tripura would be suspended until the conversion works end, said official source. As per the earlier proposal, during the first phase, mega block work would start in this route and later after the completion, the BG conversion would start. In the recent past the meter gauge rail line from Lumding to Shilchar via Badarpur was converted to broad gauge. The official informed that despite the BG conversion work had ended from Lumding to Shilchar the train service could not be started because of some minor problems in the rail track. The train service from Lumding to Shilchar would start soon, official said. The official said a total of 227 km stretch meter gauge till Agartala would be converted into broad gauge. “Recently the equipments and other machineries had already started arriving here in Agartala with the railway officials, engineers and others are preparing to kick off the BG conversion work from Badarpur to Agartala from October this year.†The official confirmed that the construction work of broad gauge platform had already started at the middle of Badarpur site and also in some parts of Agartala towards Badarpur. Tripura opposes Modi’s land acqui | AGARTALA, July 18 (TIWN): Chief Minister Manik Sarkar addressing the recent NITI Aayog meeting on Modi’s new land bill at New Delhi chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “The state cannot afford to support the attempt of the Union Government to amend the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 on most of the issues at this moment.†Sarkar said that the Government Amendments claim that it would ensure Mandatory Employment for Farm Labour. However, this actually dilutes the provisions of the Principal Act where there was the possibility of employment for the dependents on land including agricultural workers, share-croppers, landless, artisans and other rural workers. The provisions of the Principal Act regarding the affected families should remain. The option of land for land would be explored in addition to such employment and all social security benefits must accrue to the affected. The option of a one-time payment of a lump-sum to the affected family or an annuity must also be provided. The Union Ministry has recently approved the project being proposed by the state government, said an official source.In view of river Gomati and Howrah, Tripura government has earlier proposed for a water link with Bangladesh following which one Mesars Rights Limited Company was entrusted to frame the Direct Project Report (DPR).After due examinations, the company estimated a project of Rs. 11 crore 19 lakh 15 thousand to increase the navigability at river Howrah whereas Rs. 12 crore 58 lakh 78 thousand was proposed to be sanctioned to increase the navigability at river Gomati, said the official.However, later the state government had accordingly sent two separate DPRs for river Howrah and river Gomati to Union Ministry of Shipping.Recently the Inland Water Authority of India replying to the proposal of state government mentioned that the water flow at River Howrah is less as compared to river Gomati whereas river Gomati also needs to be improved as maximum part of the embankment has been demolished.Rs. 2 crore has been sanctioned for the project whereas according to the DWS department Rs. 20 crore would be required to complete the project of linking River Gomati with Bangladesh Meghna River and also to increase the navigability in Gomati. | 17-Jul-2015 |

Congress accuses Left front govt. of dep | AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Just after Tripura Left front government announced 5 percent Dearness Allowance (DA) for its employees, opposition congress seeking RTI unearthed hefty financial deprivation by the Left front government since last four Financial Years (FYs). Opposition leader Sudip Roy Barman on Friday accusing the Left front government alleged that despite the central government had sanctioned sufficient fund for employees, the Left front government has been depriving the employees and pensioners whereas crores of money showed unspent. While Barman was addressing the media persons on Friday at Congress Bhawan, concerning over the recent announcement of DA, Barman claimed, “Tripura government employees and the pensioners under Left regime are getting the minimum salary and pensions in the country.†“The Left front government has been depriving the government employees since decades,†claims Barman. After due examinations of the documents being collected from the A.G. Tripura through RTI, Barman on Friday unearthed that for last four financial years Tripura Government had failed to spend Rs. 1473.12 crore whereas this could have bridge the gap of the pending wages of government employees. During 2010-11 FY central government had sanctioned Rs. 2303.69 crore amongst which the state government failed to spend Rs. 160.54 crore. Barman unearthed that the gap was 29 per cent whereas Left front government managed to give only 2 per cent DA to its employees in the FY. During 2011-12 FY amongst the sanctioned fund of Rs. 2189.77 crore Rs. 211.27 remained unspent and the gap increased to 35 percent after the state government managed to give only 6 per cent allowance during the two phase in the FY. | 17-Jul-2015 |
NE states have financial crisis, Tripura | AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Chief Ministers of northeast Indian states continue to pressurize the centre for the continuation of 90:10 funding pattern, along with the special category status of the states. Drawing the attention of PM Modi at NITI Aayog meeting convened recently at New Delhi, Tripura CM Manik Sarkar had put forward the immense financial crisis being faced by the NE states because of the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission and the dissolution of the planning commission. Sarkar demanded, “Special Category status that was granted to them on account of their underdevelopment and lack of resource base, and which was practically withdrawn after the dissolution of planning commission.†A resolution signed by all the NE CMs also demanded that the 90:10 sharing pattern for CSS should not be disturbed for NE states. The CMs, including Sarkar, had requested the PM for a joint meeting to discuss this crucial matter. Sarkar said, “From the recommendation of 14th finance commission and union budget 2015-16 it appears that the special category state status of Northeastern states is going to be discontinued.†Northeastern states are arguing that any change in the sharing pattern will only add to the states' liabilities and overburden industrially backward Northeast India, said Sarkar.Sarkar who also attended the meeting convened on July 15 said in addition that the NE Region had been suffering from the problem of extremism for long and a main reason for that was under development. | 17-Jul-2015 |
Govt. ready to pay compensation to jyot | AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Tripura government had challenged the occupants of 'khash' land saying that they might take any kind of legal step regarding the encroachment process to be taken up soon for the construction of Agartala’s first flyover. Once the encroachment is done, the two lane road beneath the flyover would come up to facilitate 70 per cent of the vehicles coming from South and enters Nagerjala bus stand, said PWD Minister Badal Chowdhury. Chowdhury clarified “Even if the occupants who had illegally occupied the khash land continues their movement demanding for non-encroachment of their land, the state government has nothing to do with that because we do have some rules and regulations through which we are moving ahead to introduce Agartala’s first flyover.†Chowdhury in view of the encroachment process to be carried soon had sought the co-operation of public so that the long awaiting dream comes true at last. “We are moving ahead to built double lane beneath the flyover bridge so that 70 per cent of the heavy loaded vehicles which comes from Southern side and enters Nagerjala bus stand can avail the road without touching the flyover,†adding Chowdhury said that this would introduce congestion free city. Singh, Addl DG, BSF Eastern Command on Thursday after inaugurating Composite BOP at Sabroom in South Tripura district. "Under the central project, the composite BOP, this is built at a cost of Rs. 2.71 Crores. So it was very important to have a composite BOP here to keep an eye, added Singh.On a question, Singh said, "Our effort is to provide best of facilities to our jawans and now work will start to upgrade other BOPs in Tripura. Tripura Govt. mulls to fortify infiltrat | AGARTALA, July 16 (TIWN): Keeping in view the infiltration routes of insurgent groups along the bordering areas, Tripura Left front government has recently sought centre’s nod to fortify border guarding and fencing at the earliest. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said, “Unless the Mizoram border is also effectively guarded and fenced, the infiltration and ingress of extremists into the state could not be effectively checked.†Sarkar taking up the issue with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) at Guwahati felt that a comprehensive BSF deployment plan should be worked out by the MoHA for Tripura and Mizoram sector which would address security deficit and meet emerging cross border challenges. It is worthy to mention here that Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) have agreed to construct at least 40 new border outposts (BOPs) along India-Bangladesh bordering Mizoram to check militant activities and trafficking. BSF and BGB had also recently agreed to fortify vigilance along the bordering areas of state to restrict insurgency and infiltration. The mountainous terrain, dense forests and other hindrances make the borders porous and vulnerable, enabling illegal immigrants and intruders cross over without any hurdles. It is also to be mentioned here that in the recent past this year Troopers of the 30th battalion of Assam Rifles have arrested an alleged arms peddler from the Tripura-Mizoram border, based on specific intelligence information.
