AMBASSA 18 July (TIWN): Agitated MGNREGA workers of Kathalbari Panchayat under Ambassa RD Block of Dhalai District on saturday came out in the NH44 raising slogans against Panchayat authorities for non-payment of their wages and blocked the traffic at National Highway. About 100 workers took out a rally at around 1.30 pm and staged a road blockade along the busy road for three hours that halted the traffic. Passenger carrying vehicles were stranded of on the National Highway.

The protestors were anxious about their wages. On reaching information, Ambassa Police rushed to the spot to disperse the crowd but as tension continued to simmer, Police were deployed on the spot. Prior to this, the workers also staged a dharna in the NH44 here to protest against rampant irregularities and demanded early release of their wages.

The protesters alleged that despite several requests made to authorities, no steps had been taken to pay their wages. However, the protesters relented after Ambassa BDO intervened and assured an inquiry into their complaint. The workers are planning to intensify the agitation from next week. The agitation has registered increasing responses from workers, they claimed. The deprived workers threatened of launching an intensified struggle if their demand was not concede soon.

 It is also to be mentionable here that the state Tripura is already under the limelight of massive corruptions and scams in MGNREGA fund. And besides,  such an irregularities in MGNREGA wages under almost every Panchayats of the state are often coming out highlighted where the workers are being deprived at large and often they show a protest infront of the panchayats. But the administration has been playing a role of a silent spectator, with the state government leaving no stones.
