Contraband item worth 84 lakh seized

AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Contraband items worth Rs 84 lakh 31 thousand 350 were seized in a joint raid carried out by the BSF, police and the customs on Thursday at Malaynagar at Nischintpur border.

Acting on a tip-off raid, 69 bn BSF troops led by police and customs conducted raid in two vehicles parked at Malaynagar and seized 65,700 bottle of phensedyl.

BSF recovered more than 65,000 bottles of Phensidyl including Corex and Icon-XP from the vehicles parked at the by-pass Malaynagar road.

Based on secret information, a raid was conducted in the vehicle bearing number NL01-L-32229 and another vehicle Bolero bearing number TR01-U-1883. During the search, troops recovered a total of 65,700 bottles of Phensidyl costing rupees 105.80 per bottle.

The cost of seized contraband items were estimated at nearly about Rs 84, 31,350. Nobody was arrested in this connection. 

After ending this successful raid, BSF Company commander Chittar pal said that the entire area is floating on with various contraband items. A section of youths and school going students are bitterly addicted to these narcotic items. With an effort to prevent the drug addiction, the administration will keep continuing anti-drug raids in different corners of the area, he added.

He further said that every year during the Eid festival the smuggling of the contraband rises on its peak. As in Bangladesh the consumption of the alcohol is prohibited the smugglers takes the shelter of the NE state Tripura to smuggle the contraband items. Taking the advantage of the lack of the wire-fence in the border area the smugglers intrude to Tripura and smuggle contraband goods across the border.        

However, the localities claimed that Smuggling of Phensedyl a cough syrup with an exceedingly high dose of codeine, high dose of painkillers with drugs and other contraband items are increasing day by day in the border area.                                     

The localities further said that Consumption of alcohol is banned in Muslim majority Bangladesh and thus the demand of alternative means like cough syrup is on the rise in the neighboring country. Numerous smugglers from both sides of border are engaged in illegal trade of Phensedyl and foreign liquor as it gives them huge incomes.

Nobody was arrested in this connection, and police is further investigating the case.
