88 percent turnout in Tripura by-electio | AGARTALA, Feb 13 (TIWN / IANS): Around 88 percent of the 38,270 voters on Saturday cast their ballots in the by-election to the Amarpur assembly seat in Tripura, an official said. The polling, which was totally peaceful, started at 8 a.m. amidst tight security and ended at 5 p.m without any interruption. The counting will be on February 16. "No untoward incident has been reported so far and polling was completely peaceful and smooth. Around 88 percent votes were recorded when polling ended at 5 p.m.," Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Debashish Modak told IANS. There were 51 polling stations. Of the total 38,270 eligible voters, 18,807 are women. Though there were seven candidates in the by-election, the main contest was likely to be between ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) nominee Parimal Debnath, Congress's Chanchal Dey and Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Ranjit Das. There are four other aspirants from local parties. The by-election was necessitated following the resignation of CPI-M legislator Manoranjan Acharjee after he was alleged to have molested a minor girl.Acharjee, who was elected in 2008 and again in 2013 from the constituency, has denied the charges. Commuters faced transport chaos as they tried to travel through Battala this morning after the burst pipe sent a torrent of water down residential streets. Several residents could be seen trying to wade through the water. Water supply was disrupted in some parts of the city owing to the breakage of the water pipe at Battala tri-junction while the flyover construction works was being carried out on the stretch. The pipe burst occurred around 9am on Saturday during the flyover piling works. According to sources, pipe bursts are a common occurrence along the stretch during the works. All CPI-M politburo and central committee members will give their views on the subject, a party leader said on Friday."All members of the PB (politburo) and CC (central committee) will convey their personal opinion," Bijan Dhar, a central committee member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, told reporters here. The two policy making bodies of the CPI-M are scheduled to meet next week in New Delhi -- the politburo on February 16 and the central committee on February 17-18. The former has 16 members and the latter 101. CPM facing jolt on 'tie-up' issue | AGARTALA, Feb 12 (TIWN) : On the alliance controversy CPM Polit bureau members and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar are busy in attending West Bengal state Committee meeting along with Prakash Karat and other senior leaders of Party. The tie-up issue of West Bengal pushed the entire Party into a jolt within the party. South lobby of CPM led by party hardliner Karat and ESR Pillai referred the decision of Party Congress and stood against any tie-up with Congress in anywhere. Bengal leaders of CPM initiated the tie-up approach with the help of some Congress leaders against the ruling Trinamool Congress in the Assembly Election. On contrary Congress ranks from Kerala and Tripura oppose the move and knocked the door of High Command to mount pressure on those leaders of Bengal who actually carried the proposal forward to Delhi. By maintaining its own characteristics, Tripura CPM till today kept mum on this issue but its rank and file are watching the situation keenly. East Dukli dual murder: two arrested, on | AGARTALA, Feb 11 (TIWN): In a major breakthrough, Tripura police on Thursday arrested two accused over the dual murder case of mother and son at East Dukli. According to the police sources, both the accused have accepted about the murder and also had demonstrated how they murdered both the deceased. Tripura police on Thursday visited the spot and investigated about the dual murder of mother (Gouri Chakranorty) and son (Debabrata Chakraborty).
