Talking to the reporters here at the civil secretariat Kumar said that Minister had suggested the railway authorities to finish the Broad gauge (BG) conversion work within the committed time period. He said, “The BG line construction work from Agartala to Udaipur would be completed by March 2016, whereas the rail line work up to Sabroom would be completed by March 2018.†He also said that the team had visited the state and inspected the ongoing construction sites and had a chat with the rail passengers. “There is no problem with the work and it is running smoothly and fast in progress,†Kumar told to reporters. However later speaking to the reporters here at the civil secretariat Minister Badal Chowdhury said, “The railway authority were suggested to build cross bridges over the rail line at every platforms of the rail stations to ensure free movement of the passengers. Construction work of the flyover from Agartala Drop gate to Fire service chowmuhni via Battala is expected to be completed by 30 months from now. One of the leading construction company Nagarjuna Constructions is entrusted to take up the construction of Rs. 250 crore sanctioned project work of building fly over which would first of its kind here in the state. Tripura repeals controversial AFSPA due | AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Tripura government has repealed two decades old Armed Forces Special Powers Act, (AFSPA) from the state with immediate effect, said Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.Sarkar told media the decision was taken in the meeting of council of ministers on Wednesday. Both tribal based opposition IPFT and INPT have been demanding abolish of the draconian Act, which they termed as instrument to oppress the tribals.According to them, several innocent tribals were faced atrocities and torture even killed and booked under law by the security forces whenever they raise voice for rights.“Insurgency activities in the state are now reduced almost at zero. The demand for repealing of AFSPA has been persuaded at various levels. But we could not decide it because the security forces did not cleared the nod,†Sarkar stated.AFSPA was promulgated in the state in Feb 16, 1997 due to relentless violence and bloodshed. As per the provisions of the Act, it was reviewed and extended in every six months for past 20 years.“Recently, when the proposal of further extension of AFSPA came to the government, we sought report from all concerns about latest law and order situation in regard to extremists’ presence and activities. Finally, the security agencies have agreed to the proposal of repealing the Act,†Sarkar added.Sarkar attributed that initially, AFSPA was promulgated across two-third of the total police station areas but gradually the coverage of the Act was reduced with the improving situation.At present AFSPA is in operational fully in 26 police stations areas and partially in four police station areas out of 74 police stations and 36 out posts of Tripura. | 27-May-2015 |
Identification of Bru refugees enrolled | AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Mizoram govt. has finally agreed to take back all the tribal refugees sheltering in Tripura for the past 18 years. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh early this year had visited the Kanchanpur refugee camps and has taken the stock of the situation. With the decks cleared for repatriation for the Bru refugees, the identification of those Bru refugees in the relief camps who were enrolled in the Mizoram voters' lists would begin from June 2, said an official of Kanchanpur on Wednesday. Talking to TIWN the official said that the identification of the refugees would be processed in two phases. He also said that the repatriation process of the bru refugees would commence from mid-June. During the first phase the refugees enrolled in Mizoram voter lists would be identified whereas during the second phase those who claimed to be actual residents of the state but were not included in the voters' lists would be identified, said the officer. The identification and actual repatriation would be conducted from Kaskau relief camp, the nearest one from the Mizoram border. The official on Wednesday told to TIWN that several meeting were held in rgard of the repatriation of the bru refugees and at last it was finalised that the process would commence from the middle of June, 2015 and would be completed likely by September. | 27-May-2015 |

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal slams | AGARTALA, May 27 (TIWN): Union Minister for Sports Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday slammed the Manik Sarkar led CPI-M govt for rampant ‘corruption’ in this Left ruled state. “Tripura has no future until the CPI-M rule ends here,†said Sonowal adding that the Centre is giving adequate funds to the State, but development in Tripura did not take place as it should have been. "The visit is expected to further expand the cordial and cooperative relationship between the two countries and strengthen the ties of friendship and trust between India and Bangladesh," it added.During the visit, Modi will hold discussions with Hasina. His programme will also include a call on President Mohammed Abdul Hamid, the statement said. Ahead of Indian Premier proposed Dhaka visit, Bangladesh Government led by Sheikh Hassina very recently has approved India’s proposal to connect Tripura with the international Internet gateway (South-East Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 4 cable system) passing through Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh. Cox’s Bazar is 200-250 km away from Tripura. From Sabroom, it takes only 45 minutes to reach Cox’s Bazar. Presently a bridge is under construction that will connect Sabroom with Cox Bazaar. Sabroom has a border hut which was started few months back. TSECL ‘reluctant’ to buy po | AGARTALA, May 26 (TIWN): OTPC, Palatna the biggest power plant of its kind was setup in the North eastern state of Tripura with aim to make the state load shedding free. But what makes the story interesting in that yet today since after its setup the Left ruled state has failed to receive enough power from Palatana power plant to meet the demands. But the real entity for the state yet today facing power crisis has come to limelight with the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL) is allegedly reluctant to buy additional power from the Palatana power plant, as a result power shortage has hit the state in summer's peak season. According to the highly placed source of the power department TSECL some way or other refused to buy power from the plant more than 70 MW. To restrict any kind of loss to the ambitious project the Palatana Power plant is currently not taking any heavy load to the turbines of both Unit – I and unit – II, said the source. It has been also reported that Palatana is going through no technical faults and is in a position to run both the units at a time with full load, but due to no significant demand of power from the state as well as a from other north eastern states, less power is being generated.
