CPI-M's Jharna Das Baidya re-elected to | Agartala, March 21 (TIWN / IANS): Jharna Das Baidya of Tripura's ruling CPI-M was on Monday re-elected to the Rajya Sabha, defeating Congress candidate and former Tripura assembly speaker Jyotirmoy Nath.Election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state was held on Monday at the Tripura assembly as Baidya's six-year term ends on April 2. "Jharna Das Baidya got 49 votes while Congress candidate Nath secured only 10 votes," assembly secretary Bamdeb Majumder, who was also the returning officer for the election, told reporters. Ailing Communist Party of India-Marxist legislator and minister (without portfolio) Bhanu Lal Saha could not vote as he was out of Tripura for cancer treatment.The CPI-M candidate's win was almost certain as the strength of the ruling Left Front in the 60-member house is 50, with the CPI-M alone having 48 members. However, it is to be mentioned here that Election for the single Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura was announced by the election commission scheduled to hold on March 21, 2016. The election commission issued the notification and according to the circular published by the election commission of India the seat of Rajya Sabha from Tripura will fall vacant on April 2, this year, when the tenure of the incumbent member Jharna Das Baidya will expire.According to Election Commission announcement a formal notification for the election issued on March 4, the last date for filing of nomination was March 11, 2016. According to the reports, Excise Department officials of Assam-Churaibari on Monday seized 200 cartons of foreign liquor. As per the market value the cost of the seized 200 cartons of foreign liquor is Rs. 4 Lakh 10 thousand. Sources mentioned that the Lori full of foreign liquor was heading towards the state from Guwahati. The excise department has been seizing many truckloads of liquor that were being smuggled into various parts of the state and also through Indo-Bangla border area.With just counting days are left for the celebration of Holi, the recovery of truck load of foreign liquor has triggered panic in the State.Although it has been announced that on March 23 all the liquor shop will remain close for the security purpose, but it seems like some illicit business men are gearing up for selling liquor in black market. Left Front manifesto calls for secular d | KOLKATA / AGARTALA, March 21 (TIWN / IANS): West Bengal's Left Front, which has gone for seat adjustment with the Congress, on Sunday released its election manifesto calling for the formation of a secular democratic government and urging the people to defeat the ruling Trinamool Congress to restore democracy in the state."Our aim is to restore democracy and rule of law. We will ensure freedom of expression for all. The police and the administration will have to work by following the multi-party democratic tradition," the 16-page manifesto promised.Left Front chairman Biman Bose told the media: "To achieve this, we have to defeat the Trinamool government. Towards that end, we want the people to unite and form a democratic secular government in the state." The Left Front resolved to free all political prisoners, and withdrawal of false cases, besides ensuring that police and the administration work neutrally for securing a society free of fear by strictly dealing with anti-socials. It promised to ensure that statutory bodies like the Women's Commission, Lokayukta, state Election Commission, state Human Rights Commission functioned with full authority. Railway shed collapsed at Agartala Rail | AGARTALA, March 20 (TIWN): Where the people of the landlocked state were waiting for the commencement of BG passenger train by the end of this month, the people received a jolt with the information about the sudden collapse of the rail shed at Badarghat railway station on Sunday morning.The incident came as a shock to the people as the newly constructed rail shed collapsed suddenly leaving at least four labourers critically injured in the spot. The police alleged that centre pillar was not erected properly, cause the collapse. No case has been registered in this connection. However, 4 labourers are reported with injuries among them 3 are shifted to private hospital for better treatment. The work, which began a couple of months ago, was expected to be completed in a few days so that the people could assess the benefit of railway service but before the state could begin with the service this incident came as a shock to the people of the state. NEEPCO seeks govt. intervention; Gas cut | AGARTALA, March 20 (TIWN): Powered by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) Tripura asset the North East Tripura's 101 MW gas-based Monarchak power plant in Tripura, about 50 km from here; has undergone complete shutdown again due to the gas cut, said official source. Talking to TIWN correspondent, NEEPCO high official said that “We had to shut down the plant again as ONGC had failed to supply required gas for the plant causing a heavy damage to the plantâ€. However, the official further said that they have informed the issue to Chief Secretary Yash Pal Singh, Power minister Manik Dey seeking their intervention to solve the problems, but so far no action is taken to solve the problems. He also said that on the one hand ONGC claims that they are unable to meet the demand of the gas in the state but is continuously supplying gas to both unit of OTPC Palatana. It is to be mentioned here that ONGC was supposed to resume its gas supply after the routine check up of the gas turbine of NEEPCO but failed to do so as the ONGC could not discover the possibility of gas from its well. Left Front approaches EC over TMC's poll | AGARTALA / KOLKATA, March 19 (TIWN / IANS): The Left Front on Friday approached the Election Commission over alleged violations of the poll code by West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress ahead of the assembly elections. A Left Front delegation led by senior Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Rabin Deb met CEO Sunil Gupta regarding the alleged violation of the model code of conduct by the Trinamool. In a deputation submitted to Gupta, they drew attention to the non-compliance of EC's directives at the grassroots. Deb said while the Left leaders already apprised the CEO about specific incidents in violation of the mode code by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, MP Mukul Roy and party leader Rezzak Mollah, the poll panel had showcaused only Mollah. Dubbing it as a "balancing act", the Left Front criticised Gupta following the showcause notice issued to CPI-M leader Mohammed Salim over comments which were in violation of the poll code - according to media reports. "We have told the CEO that if the show cause notice to Salim was issued to appease Trinamool then we will not accept it and will approach the poll panel in this regard," Deb told the media here, adding Salim is seeking legal advice in the matter.Apart from Mollah and Salim, the Commission had also issued showcause notice to Trinamool Congress' Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal on Thursday. | 19-Mar-2016 |
