AGARTALA, March 21 (TIWN): The much talked Rajya Sabha election was conducted successfully on Monday at the lobby of the Assembly amid tight security. However, it is to be mentioned here that Election for the single Rajya Sabha seat from Tripura was announced by the election commission scheduled to hold on March 21, 2016. The election commission issued the notification and according to the circular published by the election commission of India the seat of Rajya Sabha from Tripura will fall vacant on April 2, this year, when the tenure of the incumbent member Jharna Das Baidya will expire.According to Election Commission announcement a formal notification for the election issued on March 4, the last date for filing of nomination was March 11, 2016. The nomination papers given by both candidates of CPI-M and Congress was scrutinised on March 12 and the last date for withdrawal was March 14, 2016.The nomination was filed for the lone seat of Rajya Sabha election by both CPI-M and congress candidates and were declared legal after the scrutiny of the nomination papers.It is to be mentioned here that Elections to a total of 13 Rajya Sabha seats from Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab was held on Monday. Officials said the President of India and the Central Election Commission have issued separate notifications for these elections.
Lone Rajya Sabha candidate from Tripura Jharna Das Baidya has filed nomination to Assembly returning officer Bamdev Majumder at the secretariat building.
Ruling CPI-M once again in Tripura field Jharna Das Baidya, the sitting MP as its candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat from the state.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the state committee of the party.
This is the second term for Das Baidya, who is a prominent woman leader of the state.
One the other hand giving a call of non-alliance with CPI-M in the state, the Tripura Pradesh congress filed nomination of candidate for the ensuing loan seat of Rajya Sabha election in Tripura scheduled to be held on March 21.
Leader of North district Jotirmoy Nath has filed nomination as the candidate for the Rajya Sabha election.
The election was held on Monday in the premises of the Tripura Legislative Assembly. The Left Front has 50 of the total 60 seats in the Assembly.
