KAMALPUR, June 7 (TIWN): An Youth namely Bijoy Deb died at police lock-up around 12 midnight Saturday at Kamalpur. Protesting the incident and condemning the role of ‘golden era’ police, Congress launched vigorous movement. PCC President Birajit Sinha visited Kamalpur, met the higher up officials and demanded for compassion and stringent action from the part of police. SDJM started investigation and three cops got suspended.
According to the bereaved family and police, last night at around 10 pm, police detained one Bijoy Deb (37) from his residence at Noagaon on the allegation of consuming wine. This morning police informed the family members that Bijoy suddenly died in the lock-up last night around 12 am.
At once, anguish sparked among the locality. Congress leaders Goutam Biswas, Manoj Deb and others rushed to the police station. Congress staged protest in front of police station. Being informed DIG Northern range Khatrajoy Reang, SP Dhalai Bijoy Debbarma rushed to the police station. PCC president Birajit Sinha also rushed to Kamalpur.
He alongwith District Congress President Manoj Kanti Deb, Councilor Goutam Biswas, and Advocate Bijoy Krishna Chatterjee met with the police officials. Birajit demanded magisterial investigation in the matter. He also demanded for compensation of the bereaved family and the arrangement for proper education of three under-aged sons of Bijoy. However, SDJM Tapan Debbarma already started investigation in the matter and suspended three cops namely ASI Maniklal Mahanta, Duty Officer Habilder Ratan Das and Constable Pandiram Reang. The higher up officials assured of due steps in the matter. It is noteworthy that, way back in 2013 another under-custody prisoner Benu Shuklabaidya succumbed in the police lock-up.
