Matabari rare Bostami turtle recovered from the house of common people, panic grips Udaipur

UDAIPUR, Feb 8 (TIWN): Resentment brewed among the people of Udaipur when Matabari Bostami tortoises were recovered from the residents of two people.

In a bizarre incident, a tortoise of 15kg was recovered from the house of Bappa Majumder resident of canal chowmuhani under Udaipur sub division. Getting alarm the officials of Forest department rushed to the house and rescued the tortoise and again let them free to live in the Matabari Lake.

Suspicion grew over the issue when once again two turtles were recovered from the house of Ashu Das. It is to be mentioned here that suspicion grew over the issue over regular recovery of Bostami turtle form house of local people.

Similarly getting alarm the forest department official rescued the tortoises and left them in the Matabari Kalayan Sagar.

It is alleged that lack of monitoring has led to this incident.  However, no firm response is received so far how these tortoise have reached to the house of common man.

There are four types of turtles and people should pay concern to the species. As among them the Bostami turtle is one of the rare species. The most prominent temple of Tripura, the Tripura Sundari temple’s Lake Kalyan Sagar is famous all over India for the collection of its rare Bostami turtles and various kinds of fishes. But the extinctions of its tortoises have now become a matter of concern for the common masses of the state.

Tortoises were earlier found unable to breed their offspring for the artificial cemented embankments, although the cemented embankments has been bulldozes in order to save the rare species Bostami turtles, which are only found in the Kalyan Sagar of Tripureshwari Temple.

Kalyan Sagar is located on the eastern side of the Mata Tripuraswari Temple which is 3 km. away towards south from Udaipur town, Tripura. A big lake Kalyan Sagar just down to the Hillock at the backside of the Temple adds to its beauty. This natural pond has varieties of aqua species. The area of the Kalyan Sagar Lake is 2.752 acre. The lake is considered sacred and devotees worship the fishes and tortoises present here. Kalyan Sagar is famous for very rare species of tortoise in large numbers.
