PECHARTHAL / AGARTALA, April 14 (TIWN): Tripura under the leadership of Manik Sarkar is unsuccessful to control the mass anger fueled by deprivation of salary and benefits of REGA workers. Recent attack on BDOs in different parts of the state and the subsequent mass leave opted by the BDOs show the mismanagement of the top bosses of the RD department, lame duck RD Minister Naresh Jamatia. The pressure created by the hierarchy to accomplish the targetted mandays compelled the BDOs to engage the labourers in different jobs in their areas. The works were completed even before the BDOs received the labour wages from the treasury which led to the delay in payment for the already completed mandays in the festival season. The delay in payment made the labourers lose their patience leading to actions of ransacking BDO office, road blockade and even upto the manhandling of the BDOs in some places. Out of the state to attend CPI(M) Party Congress at Visakhapatnam, the Chief minister of the only left ruled state of the country is finding it difficult to concentrate in the party congress.

“The CM is keeping a close eye on the development and is being updated about the latest developments by the Chief Secretary”, said sources in the Secretariat. The wide spread tension among the MGNREGA workers have taken a bigger dimension with reports of more and more BDO offices being ransacked reaching the capital here.

According to the informations received, the police resorted to firing to disrupt the mob when the angry REGA workers ransacked the Pecharthal BDO office. One Trishita Chakma who was injured in the firing has been admitted to GB hospital here in Agartala with critical wounds. The REGA workers later blocked the Assam-Agartala road for long six hours disrupting movement of vehicles through the place. The angry mob later ransacked the local office of the CPI(M).The REGA workers were demanding payment for the works done under MNREGA schemes. Road blockades and Panchayat office ransacking were reported from other places like Kamalghat, Bisalgarh, Ambasa.

Meanwhile, the state finance department  here has released nearly Rs. 50 crores today towards MNREGA payment.

“The amount will not be sufficient to pay the whole dues and the REGA unrest will not be solved very soon”, claimed sources.

A sudden spark of violence has come on Monday after the deprived MGNREGA workers under Pecharthol Block staged a road blockade and gheraud the Block office in demand of the pending REGA wages. The workers were allegedly deprived since six months from their deserved wages. Following which the agitated workers today managed to gherau the block office at Pecharthol accusing the BDO for unnecessarily delaying the payment of the beneficiaries for past six months.

Later, after the situation has turned violent under Pecharthol Block, a large number of TSR police were deployed at the area, which acting on behest of the SDPO Prashenjit Ghosh allegedly opened fire (more than 100 rounds). The TSR also made an attack on the agitated workers. The violence turned worst after the TSR jawans allegedly charged lathi on the agitators. The Block Development Officer (BDO) Pijush Biswas remained absconding to get rid off the violence between the TSR and the agitators.

According to the recent report till the news has been filed, most surprisingly taking the Pecharthol Block a battle field the TSR jawans allegedly making an attack on the agitators rushing to their home.

However, during the incident on Monday SDPO and OC Pecharthol were also attacked and are recently undergoing treatment at Agartala GBP hospital while SDPO at local hospital. Besides, more than 20 agitators were left injured while one Trishita Chakma has been hospitalized after receiving injury from TSR firing during the violence under Pecharthol Block. Talking to TIWN in this regard (till the news is filed) Additional SP Nabadip Jamatia (Unakoti) said, “The situation has been brought under control now and the TSR along with the Police has been deployed at the area.”

However the incident on Monday under Pecharthol Block has triggered a huge resentment among the deprived REGA workers after the TSR charged lathi on them. The agitators today also broke the local CPIM party office along with the block office.
