Agartala, December 21 (TIWN): Over the past few years, the face of HIV/AIDS has changed immensely. Different areas of the state Tripura and new populations are at risk now more than ever before. When it comes to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS, and treating people who have already come into contact with the virus, the state Tripura has gained another momentum with a rise of HIV Positive.

According to the recent report from the Tripura Aids Control Society (TACS) a total of 143 people including 15 pregnant women were tested HIV positive this year, whereas last year as many as 72,000 blood samples were tested of which 225 persons were found to be positive and 70 pregnant women tested HIV positive in the past three years.

Currently there are 68 centres for HIV test in the state which would rise to 82 by the next year.

Aids Control Society has intensified campaign to make people aware about HIV/AIDS and has taken all steps to bring the infection to zero level, but all this seems to have bowed down infront of the rising HIV Positive in Tripura, adding 20 persons have died of the disease during the past one year. HIV positive cases have increased from 184 in 2012-13 to 225 in 2014-15 in the State.

Despite the rise in the overall awareness levels and the continuing drive, the numbers of HIV positive cases are steadily going up in the state Tripura.

However, it is to be mentioned here that the socio-economic inequality and poverty for increasing number of FSW that was not only spreading HIV and AIDS but also creating a social destabilization had already stand tall here in Tripura. According to National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), the number of FSW in Tripura was 10,000 during 2009-10 and it was estimated the number has substantially risen over the past four years. And now again this year with a sudden raises in HIV positive a total of 143 people including 15 pregnant women were tested HIV positive. And this clearly highlights the lack of awareness and a silent role of the Tripura Govt. to curb the issue.

The HIV Sentinel Surveillance, a study conducted by the Union Health Ministry, suggests that Tripura’s HIV positivity rate stands at .019 per cent which means one HIV positive case in each 500 people. In Tripura, a total of 464 AIDS patients are under ART treatment.
