AGARTALA, July 24 (TIWN): The first consignment of 10,000 MT foodgrain scheduled to be imported into the state via Ashuganj port in Bangladesh would enter Tripura through Akhaura International Check-Post (ICP) on July 27, official sources said. The foodgrain consignment coming from Vishakhapatnam would be arriving in Tripura through Ashuganj port after the completion of Ramadan, Joint Director of the Food and Civil Supplies D Chakraborty said here today.

Asked about latest development over the issue, the official said that the foodgrain consignment would be coming from Andhra Pradesh via West Bengal and Bangladesh.

The official said that the transit facility through Bangladesh would save at least Rs. 8 crore of the state exchequer. Transportation costs are much higher in roadways, more due to the poor condition of the National Highway 44.

Tripura is currently having forty days foodgrain stock for all public distribution consumers. The Department of Food and Civil Supplies is trying to make optimum use of the food godowns in the state to prepare for the hard days during the six months of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) mega block, a highly placed source said.

The Department is currently engaged in preparing for the six months mega block of the NFR starting October this year. “We are currently having forty days foodgrain stock including godowns of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the Food Department”, the source said.

The entire bulk of PDS users are estimated to require an average of 1,000 MT rice per day. All food godowns of the state including those operated by the FCI have a cumulative capacity of housing 90,000 MT, amounting to a maximum of ninety days stock period.

The state currently needs an average of 30,000 MT rice per month to meet the ration requirements with a cumulative figure of 1 lakh 80 thousand MT rice needed per year.
