AGARTALA, June 5 (TIWN): The repatriation of Bangladeshi nationals who had recently entered border areas of Dhalai district is expected to begin tomorrow in the presence of Border Security Force (BSF) and Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB), Dhalai District Magistrate Milind K Ramteke said today.
The Bangladeshi nationals would be sent back to their homeland as per the decision to be taken at a meeting of BSF and BGB at place under Raishaybari police station tomorrow, he said adding that the BSF-BGB meeting would start tomorrow at 8.30 am to resolve the issue.
As per the decision taken yesterday, the Bangladeshi nationals were supposed to go back today itself but the BSF authority did not get response from BGB side till 5.30 pm. Later, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken up the issue with its Bangladesh counterpart. Around 6 pm, the BGB authority has contacted BSF authority to have a flag meeting tomorrow to resolve the issue.
Ramteke had already spoken to Deputy Commissioner of Khagracherri in Bangladesh about the influx of Bangladeshi nationals. “The Khagracherri Deputy Commissioner has agreed to welcome their own people,” the DM said.
The administration, he said, has already prepared a list of 84 Bangladeshi nationals who have crossed over the Indo-Bangla border. In the wake of unrest at Khagracherri district of Bangladesh, around 84 Bangladeshi families had crossed over the unfenced Indo-Bangla border and taken shelter at Tuichakma ADC village in Dhalai district.
The BSF today handed over list of names of the refugees to BGB, the verification of the names will be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting between both forces said the spokesperson, adding security was beefed up at fence less patches of the eastern sector by deploying additional BSF personnel. The BSF here also informed their headquarters in New Delhi and is coordinating on the matter with the Border Guards Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, DM of Dhalai district Milind Ramteke camped at Ganddachara to review the situation. Speaking to TIWN over telephone he said that there is no report of fresh influx of Bangladeshi tribals and administration is constantly monitoring the situation.
Around 300 people from Bangladesh’s hill mainly Chakmas and Tripuri tribes have entered to escape tension on Tuesday last sneaked in through Ganddachara sub division. In a similar incident in August last year, over 1,500 tribals took shelter in the border village of Karbook after fleeing from five villages in the same Khagrachari district over the reported abduction of a leader of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Tripura shares an 856-km border with Bangladesh which is porous because it extends over mountains that are densely forested.
