UDAIPUR, June 4 (TIWN): Transport ruckus shaped into new trouble on Wednesday as long range commercial bus service was entirely stalled in Agartala-Udaipur and Agartala-Sabroom route till late afternoon. Few buses operated by the Tripura Road Transport Corporation (TRTC) plied in both routes since this morning, resulting in steep downfall of passenger figures. The situation returned to normal only after the local administration intervened in the afternoon.

Local sources at Udaipur said that all private commercial vehicle movement in Agartala-Udaipur route was stalled till 1 PM today. Internal feuds inside the Tripura Motor Sramik Union (TMSU) members at Rajarbag motorstand in Udaipur town started from protests raised by jeep and other small four wheeler operators who objected to overloading in long range buses.

“Commercial buses are allowed to charge Rs. 30 from each passenger in Agartala-Udaipur route according to the new fare rate. They charged the permitted amount but tried to carry way higher number of passengers above the highest permissible limit. This puts business of commercial LMV operators in jeopardy”, a jeep driver and member of TMSU said. He added that after he raised objection over the issue, a group of bus operators physically assaulted him. He is reported to have sustained multiple injuries on his person.

The problem resulted in total strike by long range bus operators and commercial LMVs from early morning today. The strike was later lifted with the intervention of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Udaipur) Ajit Debnath, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and other officials of the Transport Department.

Asked about the issue, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ajit Debnath said, “We have urged all bus and jeep operators to maintain the government guidelines of fare and passenger ceiling. We are clear about our standpoint that no overloading would be tolerated”. He added that vehicular movement became normal by early afternoon today.
