Mizoram Govt  to hold dialogue on repatriation of Bru refugees

AGARTALA, June 2 (TIWN): Home department of Mizoram government, planning for dialogue with counterpart of Tripura government regarding the repatriation of the Bru refugees from Tripura to Mizoram told K. Lalthammaia, Mizoram’s Mamit district deputy commissioner.Speaking to TIWN today over telephone he said that the date and time likely to be finalized soon by Mizoram government for the meeting. About postponing of repatriation, schedule to hold on May 17 he said this time the state government of Mizoram will make sure the process begin from second week of this month.

He said altogether 494 Bru families have been verified and they are confirmed as the genuine residents of Mizoram. The verification work was conducted early last month. In order to bring back these Reang (Bru) 494 families refugees living in Tripura to Mizoram. 

Accordingly to the official each of the families would be given a rehabilitation of Rs. 80,000 for house construction, Rs. 5500 for conveyance and Rs. 2000 for makeshift. They would also be provided rice free of cost for one year. It is worth mentioning here that the relationship between the Mizos and the Brus has not been going well in the past 15 years. Hundreds of Brus had left Mizoram in 1997 and in 2009. Meanwhile, the official said here that the government of Tripura will arrange vehicles for transportation of the Brus while the government of Mizoram will take care of the refugees after reaching Mizoram. The state government of Mizoram will provide rice and money for a time being.
