AGARTALA, Aug 19 (TIWN): Acting on a tip off, newly appointed Sadar SDM Summit Roy Chowdhury on Friday seized a total 15 bags of rice along with huge bags of wheat, Sugar and foreign liquors from MG Bazaar after information of illegal smuggling of rice bags were allegedly reported from the area. The officials, after receiving a tip off, raided the MG bazaar market shed area and seized the rice bags. The Sadar sub-divisional administration led by SDM- Sumit Roy Chowdhuy and officials of Food and excise department conducted the raid at MG Bazaar followed by a sudden raid at Lichu Bagan market shed. Based on secret information, Sub Divisional Magistrate- Sumit Roy Chowdhury, conducted raid in the Maharajganj and Lichu Bagan Market area However, concluding the raid at MG Bazaar, the team also raided Lichu Bagan market shed from where huge amount foreign liquor was seized along with rice bags. Reportedly no one was arrested in this raid. Alleged Illegal intrusion of the extremist, smuggling of contraband items and cattle from Tripura to Bangladesh and vice-versa has become an everyday issue.

Due to lack of border fencing across the border area Tripura has become the hub for transport of the prohibited goods.

Recently it was found that, terrorists bombings in different places of India have indicated that militants are "freely using" the porous border to enter into India to carry out their heinous acts. The increasing numbers has made it virtually impossible to stop illegal entry despite of the security forces deployed in the border area.  Therefore, it is necessary that as much attention be given to the border area in Tripura to avoid illegal intrusion from Bangladesh.

The Indo-Bangladesh border is highly leaky making the illegal movement of people and goods a regular affair. The territory and the demographic composition of the border area make it favorable for Bangladeshis to sneak into India and also to get easily assimilated among the local masses. Along with illegal entry, migration from Bangladesh into India, especially in Tripura has primarily been driven by the mission for better economic opportunities, which is also another way to intrude into the Indian land for hampering the socio-economic movement of the country.

Over the years, the size of this illegal migration had reached to such an astounding proportion that it had begun to alter the demographic profile and threaten the existence of socio-political people across the border. The porous nature of the border and the constant flow of people have also made it easy for insurgent groups to carry out their atrocious activities, and also have the potential to destabilize the country and threaten national security.
