AGARTALA, Aug 2 (TIWN): Congress apathy for six years at the central and state government negligence had almost made the task impossible to start the railway service in Tripura but ultimately with PM Narendra Modi’s look east policy have brought a revolution after Tripura was connected with the BG Trains.

Connectivity in the Northeast on Sunday received a shot in the arm with Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu laying the foundation stone for a 15.06-km railway track that will link Agartala with Akhaura station in Bangladesh. Bangladesh Railway Minister, Md Mazibul Hoque, also joined him in the function held in Agartala.

The much awaited weekly Express train named "Tripura Sundari Express" has started running its wheels on the track, between Agartala and Anand Vihar station of Delhi and Anand Vihar and Agartala covering a distance of around 2,480 km in 47 hours.

Rail connectivity to North-East is big on the government’s agenda has time and again been reiterated by PM Narendra Modi. In the North East, the Indian Railways has commissioned about 900 kilometres of Broad Gauge in the last two years, leaving only about 50 kilometres Meter Gauge lines to be converted in 2016-17. The expansion of rail connectivity in the entire North-East will be top priority.

This railway connectivity is the lifeline for millions in Tripura, western Manipur and Mizoram besides southern Assam.

With the launch of the passenger train, the mountainous border state of Tripura has now been connected with the national capital via Guwahati, Assam's main city which is about 600 km from Agartala.

The extension of the existing metre gauge track up to Agartala brought the city on India's rail map for the first time in October 2008 since the advent of the railways in this subcontinent in 1853.

With the inauguration of the First BG express from Tripura connecting Agartala and Delhi, Modi’s keen interest for the development railway transportation in Tripura is proved once again.

Rail connectivity in all the state of the Northeast by 2020 is the topmost priority of the BJP led union government and expectation for the few more numbers of passengers train service from Tripura is also high.

The broad gauge will help boost Tripura's economy and overall development and after years of political mind game the people of Tripura have got their first BG train in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi promises which he made that his government accorded high priority to turn India’s erstwhile “Look East” policy into an “Act East” policy is proved after the Land-locked state has marked dimensions of new development in the state to such extent.

The Indian government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is keen to develop all types of connectivity’s with all neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, to boost trade, economy and people-to-people relations.

Railway’s initiatives for better connectivity of the region will result in all-round development in North-east and the region will gradually have the highest per capita income in the country. Indian Railways is exploring ways and means to bring in more investment to the region beyond the budgetary provisions.
