AGARTALA, July 9 (TIWN): Tripura commission for women Chairperson Manika Datta Roy says that the rape accused should be given exemplary punishment once he is proved a convict. Crime against women is happening at rampant rate in the state, nothing is there to deny, added TCW Chairperson Manika Datta Roy.
Talking to TWIN correspondent, Tripura women commission Chairperson Manika Datta Roy said that “according to the police report” the crime rate has decreased over past few months and on this basis it is estimated by the commission that the crime against women has declined.
However, on the other hand she also said that crime against women is happening in the state but as the per the police reports of 2015 the crime rate has declined compared to 2014.
Adding to this, she also said that, apart from all other crimes imposed on the women, today the women are becoming the victim of domestic violence at large. Domestic violence against women is an age old phenomenon. Women were always considered weak, vulnerable and in a position to be exploited.
Speaking about Rape she further added that, in most cases, the person committing rape is someone charged with protecting the girl or woman. It could be someone in their homes, in the neighborhood, or at school. Most of the rapes were committed by persons are known to the victim.
Interestingly, altogether 196 rape cases were registered here in Tripura till January 2015 with the record in the Financial Year (FY) 2014-15 shows a hefty climb to the crimes against women. Tripura witnessed 840 cases relating to crime against women till January, 2015, out of which 196 are rape cases. A total of 107 rape cases were lodged during the financial year 2013-14, whereas during the previous FY the figures rested at 108. However but the figures jumped to 196 during the 2014-15 FY. Rape and other crimes against women, girl children has become a daily news feed here in the state with the govt. has put a serious negligence to it, as a result the rate of crimes has increased at an alarming rate in Tripura.
According to the Crimes in India 2013 report published by National Crimes Record Bureau (NCRB), Tripura had registered 1628 cases of various crimes against women during 2013, now question arise how can the women commission authority claim that the crime against women has declined in the state.
