AGARTALA, July 8 (TIWN): A high alert has been sounded on the Indo-Bangla border in the five states of West Bengal, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam and Mizoram in the wake of the terror attack in Dhaka with the Border Security Force (BSF) stepping up its vigil.

India and Bangladesh share a 4,096 km-long international border, the fifth-longest land border in the world, with West Bengal having the highest length with 2,217 km. The length of the border in the other four states is Tripura (856km), Meghalaya(443km), Assam(262km) and Mizoram(180km).

The state police have been instructed to be on high alert and take serious note of any suspicious movement in the border districts.

It is to be mentioned here that people fear about  repetition of 2008 Agartala bombings where at least 4 people were killed and a 100 injured on 1 October 2008 in a series of 5 blasts set off in Agartala, capital of the Indian state of Tripura, within 45 minutes, while two unexploded bombs were defused.

The blasts went off at Agartala's main shopping area Maharaja Ganju Bazar, Gobind Ballah Pant market, a busy Radhanagar bus stand, Agartala Motorstand, Bottala and Abhay Nagar localities. The first blast happened at Gul Bazar around 7:30 pm (IST), followed by two more at Radha Nagar Bus stand and G B Bazar, around 7:35 and 8:15 respectively. The fourth at Palace Compound. An unidentified man was killed in the blast at Radhanagar bus stand while another person succumbed to injuries. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses said two persons riding a motorcycle were seen moving suspiciously at Radhanagar bus stand and the blast took place about three minutes after they left the area.

The wounded were rushed to G.B. Pant Medical College and Hospital. Tripura police spokesman Nepal Das said that two were high-density blasts, the third a low-density one. Though the then SP of West Agartala KV Sreejesh contradicted Das about the intensity of blasts, "All bombs were of low intensity. It was meant to create panic before the Durga puja celebrations in 2008.

It is to be mentioned here that Four people were killed on Thursday in an attack aimed at a police contingent guarding the Sholakia Ground in Kishoreganj district, just before prayers began at Bangladesh's largest Eid congregation.

Police said at least 13 other persons were injured in the blasts at Azimuddin High School gate, a kilometre away from the ground, around 9 a.m.

According to the sources four victims were two police constables, a woman and an attacker.

Witnesses said over 300,000 Muslims, who had gathered at Sholakia to offer the Eid prayers, were trapped in the middle of sporadic gunshots being fired between cops and the attacker militants.

Such an attack on Eid is said to be first time in Bangladesh. It was not known immediately who launched the attack.

However, such repetitive terror attacks in Bangladesh are spreading the wave of violence in the state like Tripura.
