AGARTALA, May 30 (TIWN): Amidst tight security in the state, Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday received a grand welcome at Raj Bhawan on Monday.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan arrived in the state on Monday for inaugurating the three-day long 15th Annual conference of the Northeast Region Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (NERCPA) in the Assembly house.

Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Prof P J Kurien, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha Dr M Thambi Durai and Secretary General of Lok Sabha Anoop Mishra would be present in the inaugural function apart from Mahajan.

Speakers and Deputy Speakers of all the eight North-eastern states also remained present in the program.

Deliberations on two topics - to strengthen the NERCPA for further development of Northeast region states and soil erosion in Northeast India and its impact on the local populace and how political intervention could help to resolve the issue  to be figured in the conference.

Governor Tathagata Roy and Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tapan Chakraborty would remain in the valedictory session.

LS Speaker Sumitra Mahajan is an Indian politician who has been the Speaker of the Lok Sabha since 2014.

Sumitra Mahajan is an Indian politician who has been Speaker of the Lok Sabha since 2014. She belongs to Bharatiya Janata Party. In 2014, she won election to the Lok Sabha for the eighth time, one of three members of the 16th Lok Sabha to do so, and is currently the longest-serving woman member. She has represented the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh since 1989.

She acknowledged 18th century social reformer Ahilyabai Holkar as the inspirational figure throughout her life. She served for a time as a Union Minister. She was minister from 2002 to 2004, holding the portfolios for Human Resources, Communications and Petroleum. She is the eldest and senior most among woman members of parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha MP's list.

She is the second woman after Meira Kumar to be elected as Lok Sabha Speaker. An active parliamentarian, she not only headed important committee, but has also been a keen debater and avid questioner inside the house, often seen putting minister on the mat with her calm but firm intervention.
