AGARTALA, April 27 (TIWN): With the onset of summer season, the major issue of water crisis has hit the state.

Agitated villagers residing along Agartala-Belonia road on Wednesday stormed the streets and staged road blockade on Agartala-Belonia   road disrupting the traffic movement for hours.

Failing to get the supply of water in the area the localites again blocked the road on Wednesday demanding continuous flow of water supply.

A protester alleged that the people of the area have suffering from water crisis for past many days but the authority never took any initiative to solve the crisis of water.

“Day after day we are drinking contaminated water from the small brooks and streams and there is chance of falling ill after drinking this contaminated water”, said a woman protestor in the area.

Poor maintenance of pipelines supplying water to the city is largely to be blamed for the acute water crisis, he added. As a matter of fact, they have not been provided with sufficient drinking water during the last one week.

Although there are water tanks provided in the area but no water is provided in the area regularly, alleged a protestor.

Even after several place the authority did not take any action to look into the matter.

However, finally on Wednesday the agitated localites of the area staged a road blockade and demanded regular supply of drinking water in the area.

It is to  be mentioned here that still today Women and girls of the mentioned districts and also other rural parts of the state Tripura bear the burden of walking miles at a time to gather water from streams and ponds - full of water-borne disease that is making them and their families sick. It is to be mentioned here that it is not the money that prevents state government focusing on supply of drinking water but lack of interest and infrastructure.
