AGARTALA, Feb 25 (TIWN): Newly elected CPI-M candidate Parimal Debnath from Amarpur assembly constituency on Thursday took oath as MLA at secretariat building.

The bi-poll to Amarpur assembly constituency was held on February 13. The seat had fallen vacant following the resignation of the Manoranjan Acharjee from the Assembly on December 10 last after he was expelled from CPI (M) on charges of molestation.

Acharjee, who was elected in 2008 and again in 2013 from the constituency, has denied the charges. The CPI-M, however, expelled him on charges of wrongdoing.

Left front candidate Parimal Debnath made a clean sweep in the Amarpur bi-election with the highest margin.

Interestingly, left front never lost this seat since 1998 and is firmly gripping the position till date.

However, CPI-M candidate secured 20,355 votes, BJP with 9751, IPFT with 1623, Amrabangali 149, independent party 216 where as 262 votes were given to the account of NOTA.

The bi-election for the Amarpur Assembly segment was decided to hold after the CPI-M has kicked off its one MLA of Amarpur Assembly segment Manoranjan Acharjee on charge of moral error.    CPI-M legislator Manoranjan Acharjee has resigned from the Tripura assembly after the party expelled him on charges of wrongdoing.  Although, Acharjee has denied the charges slated against him.
