AGARTALA, Feb 8 (TIWN): A team effort of Battala outpost police on Monday arrested one drug peddler and claimed to have busted a smuggling ring involved in selling drugs from one state to another.Suspecting to operate a smuggling racket in the state, Battala police on Monday arrested one identified as Nihar Ranjan Roy resident of Joynagar area.Allegedly Nihar Ranjan Roy was involved in selling drugs including brown sugar and other contraband items in the state. Police also stated that he is a local mafia and is also involved in the murder case of Dilip Ghosh. The localites of Joynagar said that he continuously sells brown sugar and also operates a smuggling racket.Police however, acting on a tip of secret information police arrested him from his residence.A highly placed source of police department said that the accused brought drugs from Mayanmar and supplied it in Tripura, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Manipur.On the issue of contraband goods, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances.

The smuggling of drug is gaining momentum in the state, said a highly placed police sources.

It is to be mentioned here that large part of Bangladesh and Myanmar are emerging as drug consuming zones, and bordering areas of Tripura are contributing to the fast-emerging drugs market, the source mentioned. 

Police is well aware of the situation and the police often detain drug consignments that are used in Tripura. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The network is very deep-rooted and widespread. The drug smuggling would, in future, become a major deterrent to better Indo-Bangla relations, the source further said.

Large parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar are emerging as drug consuming zones, and bordering areas of Tripura are contributing to the fast-emerging drugs market. Due to easy availability of these contraband items a large section of youths of the city are becoming addicted.  Smugglers based in Tripura are sending these contraband items to Bangladesh virtually by the truckload, hundreds of acres of remote land in West Tripura have become sprawling ganja plantations, the source informed.

The smuggling of contraband items like phensedyl, correx, drugs, and tablets would, in future, become a major deterrent to better Indo-Bangla relations. But selling of contraband items in a broad daylight in an open market and medicine shops has raised questions among the police administrative section. Does it like the police know the fact and playing the role of a silent spectator? A section of people said that the police are playing a role of silent spectator in exchange of weekly bribe.
