Tripura takes pride of place in smart city, gets Rs.2 crore fund sanctioned by centre

AGARTALA, August 29 (TIWN): Taking the pride of place in the centre’s smart plan the northeastern states of Tripura has got Rs. 2 crore fund sanctioned by the centre on Friday to get smart city project implemented in the state. “Today we got Rs. 2 crore sanctioned fund by the centre under this project,” said state urban development minister Manik Dey on Friday at the civil secretariat.

Talking to the reporters in this regard Dey said that the centre had inducted 9 agencies for the northeastern states to get the DPR prepared and the State government would soon form a committee as directed by the central government to get the smart city programme implement in the state, Dey said.

He however said that the key objective of the flagship programme is not yet known to the state but despite that and as directed by the centre the government would taken up initiatives to prepare the DPR and get ready other preparatory works prior to the project get implemented in the state.

A separate meeting has been called at Guwahati for the northeastern states only and another all India level meeting has been called at Delhi which would be held very soon taking up the issue of the key objectives of smart city project, he said.

According to the formula worked out by the Union UD ministry, the more populous a state is, the maximum number of smart cities it will get. The formula gives a 50:50 weightage to a state’s population and the number of statutory towns it has.

The Centre will give Rs 48,000 crore for five years for the programme. Each city will get Rs 100 crore per year. A matching fund of Rs 48,000 crore will have to be contributed by states from their internal resources  borrowing and through private sector participation. An earlier concept note prepared by the UD ministry had envisaged investment requirement to the tune of Rs 35,000 crore annually.
