Solid Waste Management Plant remains defunct, unable to run for a single day

Agartala, August 22 (TIWN):The much hyped Municipal Solid Waste Management Plant of the state government at Debendra Chandra Nagar (DC Nagar) near Adharani Tea Estate, outskirts of the AMC could not be made operational till date due to some serious mechanical problems in the processing unit.

The plant barely ran for one day,since then, the machines in the plant started developing one problem after another greatly affecting in its smooth running, said a mechanic of the plant requesting anonymity.

Reprotedly there was a chronic machinery problem in the processing unit, particularly the motor at the final stage of the unit that got damaged one year ago. According to him the plant did not run a single day smoothly since its inception. There may be some technical faults in laying of the unit/machine.

The solid wastes collected from the Agartala Municipal Corporation  are lying unprocessed for years. Wastes materials are being dumped everywhere as the designated dumping pit is already filled up. Huge piles of garbage can be seen dumped everywhere on the sides of  the plant approach road and hill slopes in front of the plant.

“These waste materials are not only emitting foul smell and creating an unhygienic atmosphere in the surrounding area,” said a resident of DC Nagar locality.

 Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), home to over 4 lakh population and several offices, hospitals, markets and commercial establishments, produces 200 MT solid wastes in different forms daily.
A Delhi-based company-Proton Enviro Solutions Pvt Ltd has been assigned to develop a Rs. 16.50 crore solid waste management plant. The plant will produce plastic granules, eco-bricks and organize fertilizer by using the solid waste produced in different locations of the civic body area.
