AMC : 20 sitting  councilor unlikely to get renomination due to delimitation and reservation

Agartala, Aug 19 (TIWN): In the upcoming Agartala municipal corporation (AMC) election at least twenty sitting councilor will be unable to contest. Maximum of them belongs to ruling Left Front government. After demilitarization or areas, all the twnty wards became reserved . the total wards rose to 49 from the existing 35, among them 24 wards are woman reserved , 11 wards schedule caste reserve and 2 wards schedule tribe reserved.

Out of the 24 reserved wards for woman – 5 wards reserved for schedule caste  and two seats reserved for   schedule tribes. Due to reservation of seats sititng ruling party councilor liley to be opted out are three mayor  -in -  council member Shyamal Dey, Bipadbandhu Rishi Das and Kalyani Choudhury. Ward no – 2 of Shyamal Dey has become woman reserved,  ward no 34  - of  Rishi Das became 26 after delimitation  reserved for schedule caste woman.   

Ward no – 28  of kalyani became 45. Others councilor will be opted out will be abhijit Bhatttacherjee of ward no – 24, Krishna majumder of ward no – 3, Mithu Shil of ward no – 25, prafulla Das of ward no – 35,kajal rani Das of ward no – 32, Geeta Das of ward no – 6. Among the opposition congress council whose wards have changed after limitation are - Jayanta choudhury, Kalyani Dey, Himani Debbarma and Milan Das

It is mentionable here that in 2010 election 16 sitting councilor could not contest due to reservation., same going to happen this time also.

Agartala municipal council took shape of corporation on January 2014 – the day Tripura attained statehood in 1972. Hitherto lone municipal body in the state capital that was created 142 years ago by the erstwhile royals would begin its new journey as Agartala Municipal Corporation to deal with civic amenities in an area of 72 sq km
