AGARTALA, August 2 (TIWN): The select committee unanimously approved Tripura University Bill in a meeting held on Friday. The bill will be placed in assembly during the monsoon session commencing from August 7. The select committee meeting was attended by parliament affair minister Tapan Chakraborty, PWD minister Badal Chowdhury, Power Minister Manik Dey, RD minister Naresh Jamatia, tourism minister Ratan Bhowmick, finance minister Bhanu Lal Saha, chief whip Samir Deb Sarkar and three opposition members – Ratan nath, Gopal Roy and Jitendra Sarkar.
It is mentionable here that the state government has decided to accelerate process of setting up own university in Agartala. It is likely to introduce a Bill in the next Assembly session before approaching the UGC for necessary approval.
The Left Front government had earlier decided to create a State university after Tripura University was made a Central university in 2007. Officials said the State government is now ready to speed up the matter.
It is accepted by next academic year, state’s own university would start its journey. While talking about the status of the university, Education minister Tapan said the bill is ready, if all goes well by 2016, July the state is going to have its own university.
Initially four colleges would be included under the university. Infrastructure is ready. He also made it clear; there would no conflict of interest between Central University and Tripura University regarding affiliating all degree colleges in the state.
