AGARTALA, April 24 (TIWN): Udaipur, the headquarter of Gomati district, would be connected by broad gauge railway line by March 2016, said state transport secretary Samarjit Bhowmik on Thursday talking to TIWN. However it is worthy to be mentioned here that currently the project work of BG conversion is going under full swing under Gomati district. Talking to TIWN on Thursday Bhowmik confirmed, “The BG rail line up to Udaipur under Gomati District would be commissioned by March 2016.” Adding to that he further said, “Besides the rail line up to Sabroom would be commissioned by 2017.” Bhowmik also said that on its first phase under Group-A the BG line from Lumding, Badarpur to Shilchar has been taken up whereas under Group-B the line from Badarpur to Agartala has been taken up. Besides, on another separate project work that is during the phase 2 the BG line from Agartala to Sabroom would be taken up, Bhowmik said. Conversion work of 108 kilometer railway tracks of Mega Block has been already completed out of 228 kilometers. The BG conversion of the Mega Block that started on October 1st 2014 is on right track for its timely completion, the source mentioned.

However besides, the BG conversion work to link Agartala with other areas of the North eastern region is undergoing full swing with thousands of workers engaged to it. Though of course the monsoonal rain has brought another hurdles for the workers to undertake the work at the route.

The NFR has suspended train services from Lumding to Silchar, Bhairavi (Mizoram), Badarpur and Agartala routes for gauge conversion work.

If things fall in place, the ongoing work of BG conversion work from Lumding to Agartala via Badarpur would be completed by March 2016.

The foundation of the much delayed gauge conversion project Lumding to Silchar and Silchar to Agartala was laid by the then prime minister H.D. Deve Gowda in Silchar in 1996. In 2004, the then prime minister Manmohan Singh declared the project a national one.

The railways faced severe criticism for the delay in completing the Rs.5, 185 crore project that is considered to be a lifeline for southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
