AGARTALA, April 24 (TIWN): Continuous incessant rains coupled with thunderstorm over past two days affects normal life and caused damage to properties in several places of Tripura. Electricity disrupted and most of the electric poles, trees fell down like small creatures. However, Metrological Department informs that the situation will continue for the next couple of days also.

Incessant rain threw normal life out of gear in the State. The city and its neighbouring areas were pounded by heavy showers right through the day since morning, inundating several low-lying areas and arterial roads. The inadequacies of the drainage system stood exposed as sewage from open drains mixed with rain water in several areas. Residents in the flood-prone areas of the city grew anxious following the continuous downpour and the prospect of further rains, which usually results in a flood-like situation. But Public Works Department officials allayed fears on the possibility of any inundation.

Normal life and business have been affected as Norwester, hailstorm and lightning created havoc across the state. Trees uprooted, crops damaged and power supply stooped in several localities as feeders and transformers damaged.
State government has put districts’ administration on alert to keep an eye on the situation and initiate relief operations. Officials said evacuation of people not required so far though water stagnation was reported from some places.

Sources informed due to the thunder and rain, most of the areas of Bamutia had been adversely affected. Houses were damaged, trees fell down and electrical poles were uprooted. On the other hand due to this monsoon rain, National Highway becomes badly affected. Deplorable condition of the National Highway leads to the sufferings of buses and trucks travelling from other parts of the country.

But the major affect is for the farmers. Most of the crops get spoiled due to this heavy rain and thunderstorm. The damage of the watermelons across the rural areas of the state due to the rain has brought another major effect to the market here in Agartala with the sellers selling the water melons with high price. Various agricultural lands have taken the shape of water body.

Widespread monsoon have cast a negative impact on crops and have affected the yield of various food crops in various areas. However, heavier monsoon caused field floods in lower areas and resulted in more damage. It is worthy to be mentioned here that a watermelon plant (Citrullus lanatus) needs enough moisture to ensure proper growth and fruit development. Too much water can be detrimental when growing watermelons, reducing the quality of the fruit or causing it to burst.
