Agartala, April 19 (TIWN):Agartala Cycle Club (ACC), a citizen led organisation to promote non-motorised mode of transportation in shorter trip for better mobility in city life and advocating for clean, green and healthy life-style celebrated world bi-cycle day on Sunday.

Besides, holding cycle rallies and road shows, ACC submitted a memorandum to Tripura government demanding demarcation of a separate lane dedicated to cyclists in Agartala and all other town of the state to ensure safety and encourage cycling.

ACC Secretary Dhiman Daschaudhuri alleged school education department has distributed more than 6000 bi-cycle among the girl students of secondary level in Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) area in past two years. Besides, there are another about 1000 regular cycle commuters riding on AMC streets without minimum safety.

“In our study reveals that parents are not allowing many girls in using cycle for coming to school or other purpose in the city. The philosophy behind distribution of cycle was to promote green mode of transportation among youngsters and to ensure good health but it is completely failed only because of safety issue,” Daschaudhuri stated.

The demands also included withdrawal of slow moving mode of transportation like tri-cycle rickshaw from the busy roads in busy hours and suggested to shift them in all feeder and connecting roads to facilitate the dwellers in movements in small lanes and habitations.

“As per Tripura Rickshaw Regulation Act, authority should issue valid license and restricted them only the designated internal roads along with fixing the charges. Movement of rickshaw on big roads where motorized vehicles are plying sufficiently is not only risky, also not profitable for the pullers. Rather created congestion on the busy roads and reduces the mobility that resulted high level pollution and high consumption of fuel,” the memorandum stated.

It has also demanded to vacate all encroachment in footpaths and pedestrian strips immediately. Illegal vendors, hawkers, businessmen and extended markets on the street have to be free to facilitate safe and comfortable movement of the people and stop allowing all sorts of parking on the road shoulders, which have been built for comfortable traffic movement.

They further asked for streamlining enforcement by traffic personnel to ensure safety of pedestrians, cyclists and passengers of mass transport passengers. Passengers’ safety, comfort and cleanliness in mass mode of transports have to be given highest priority by the traffic police, the memorandum added.

ACC also demanded to make mandatory for all educational institutions and public offices the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5 like other important and memorable day and declare September 22 as Car Holiday for public sectors and celebrate the day as World Car Free Day by the government in compliance with the decision of UNO.
