AGARTALA, April 15 (TIWN): A total of eight teams have been formed to identify the accident prone zones in the state to curb the rising number of road mishaps, said Smriti Ranjan Das (SP, Traffic).

Taking to TIWN on Tuesday Smriti Ranjan Das (SP, Traffic) said that lack of parking place, poor awareness among locals and defunct signal posts have led to a spurt in accident related cases in the capital city Agartala and other parts here in Tripura. The town, which is expanding at a fast pace, has no parking space for vehicles. The locals face difficulty in commuting on busy thoroughfares as vehicles are parked on the roads leading to traffic congestion.

Road traffic accidents the leading cause of death by injury and the tenth leading cause of all deaths globally now make up a surprisingly significant portion here in Tripura also.

Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that the transport department is procuring sophisticated equipment to impose speed limit on vehicles on national highways and other important roads. But till today everything turns bleak. Beside, though the electronic traffic signals were proposed to be installed here in the capital city and this even seems to have diminished when even today the state govt. has not taken any certain steps to curb the increasing rate of road mishaps here in the capital city.

Smriti Ranjan Das further mentioned that Tripura traffic police are going to keep a close watch over young drivers especially those driving to school or junior colleges on two or four-wheelers.

Under the drive, the traffic police deployed officers outside schools and colleges to check minors driving vehicles (two or four-wheelers) without valid driving license, pollution and insurance.

The city had witnessed a rise in vehicular traffic and there have also been instances of underage drivers driving rashly. This posed a great risk not only to their own lives but also to others. Stunned over the rising graph of road mishaps, the city traffic police have also geared up to prevent frequent road accidents, especially in city areas.

Traffic police records claim that mostly people from minors to old age were crushed to death by a speeding vehicles on street has forced the traffic police administration and the departments concerned to chalk out a strategy to prevent such accidents.

During the years (2009-10 and 2010-11) as many as 1748 road accidents took place that killed 453 persons. A total of 2573 persons were injured in the same period. Add to it were 291 persons who were killed in 1015 road accidents in the year 2012, 1382 person more were injured.

The statistics said, the number of vehicles, which were 58,581 in the year 2001, goes up 66,507 in the year 2002. Gradually the increasing trend for number of vehicles has been continue in the year 2010 it stand 1,60,119 vehicles.
