“Mid-day meal tragedy enquiry found no serious lapses”, says Minister Tapan Chakraborty; Education Minister talks to TIWN

AGARTALA, April 11 (TIWN): After at least 50 school children fell ill consuming mid-day meal at Belonia Mirzapur School, Education Minister Tapan Chakroborty on Friday talking to TIWN said, “There is nothing serious in the case. The students were discharged after the primary treatment.”Chakroborty said that the soon after the matter was reported the department had conducted an inquiry and has found nothing serious in the case. “I had a talk with the local administration in this regard, they said everything is normal,” Chakroborty adding further said, “The students fell ill might be because of food poisoning, because before they had a mid-day meal, some students had taken a raw mango with chilies.”

However, later asked about the sample collection issue, Chakroborty said, “the department will conduct a further inquiry to it.”
He also said that before giving the meal to the students the cook along with the assigned teachers do taste the quality and then it is being feed to the students. Adding to it Chakroborty said, “Many students had taken the meal on Thursday but amongst them only few has fallen ill after consuming the mid-day meal.”

It is worthy to be mentioned here that on Friday morning at least 19 students were discharged from the district hospital, while rest of them were under observation. Later it was found that the school and the hospital authorities had not collected the sample of the meal and the heaves of the sick students.  

According to the report at least 90% of students had not attended the school today as the incident on Thursday has triggered a worry among the students and the guardians.

Besides, the Director of School Education Uttam Kumar Chakma (In-charge) along with School Inspector and other officials today visited the school and had a conversation with the students.

UK Chakma said, “The students might have fell sick due to the food poisoning, but we will investigate the matter soon.” Besides, the SFI Divisional committeeon Friday placed a deputation with the School Head Master Santosh Pal seeking proper investigation of the matter.
