Crimes up in Tripura: 3 women PS opened this year to contain crimes

AGARTALA, April 8 (TIWN): With an aim to contain the increasing rate of crimes here in Tripura, more three women police stations have been opened at Belonia, Bishalgarh and Dharmanagar. According to the official source form Tripura police more four to five women police station would be opened up to cover all the eight districts.

However at present there are 7 women police stations at the state with 2 at Agartala, 1 at Udaipur, 1 at Kailasahar, 1 at Belonia, 1 at Bishalgarh while another at Dharmanagar. The women police stations in at least six districts of the state had already started functioning.  

As part of an effort to contain crimes in the state, Home department is working to set up women police station at every district and one women desk at every police station.

The Tripura government plans to set up all-women police stations in every district, open fast track courts and take up an awareness campaign to curb atrocities against women, official sources said. The process for opening all women police stations in all eight districts has already started.

With incidents of crimes against women registering a sharp increase in recent years, Tripura has decided to increase the number of women police personnel to one-third of its total strength in the next couple of years.

The number of crimes against women has gone up in Tripura in recent years, with the Crimes ‘in India’report for 2013 published by National Crime Records Bureau (NCB) showing that number of rape cases increased from 229 in 2012 to 233 in 2013. Likewise, the number of cases of kidnapping and abduction of women and girls has gone up from 114 in 2012 to 124 in 2013.

Tripura had also registered 29 incidents of dowry deaths and 827 cases of cruelty by husband and his relatives during 2013, the NCRB report had said.
