AGARTALA, Sep 4 (TIWN): The bustling Battala market has turned into a nightmare for vendors and customers alike due to stagnant water overflowing from clogged drains. Despite it not being the monsoon season, the market has been flooded with dirty water for the past five days, causing immense inconvenience.
The situation is particularly dire during the Durga Puja festivities, with the foul smell and unhygienic conditions deterring customers from visiting the market. Traders are facing significant losses due to the lack of footfall and are frustrated with the situation.
Local traders have repeatedly tried to contact the councilor and contractor responsible for the drainage system, but despite promises, the issue remains unresolved. They're now demanding immediate action to resolve the problem.
Stagnant water poses significant health risks, including the spread of diseases like dengue fever, Zika, and West Nile Virus, which are carried by mosquitoes breeding in still water. It also creates an ideal environment for harmful bacteria and parasites to thrive, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
The situation requires urgent attention from authorities to clear the clogged drains and restore the market's normal functioning. Until then, traders will continue to suffer losses, and customers will be forced to avoid the area.
