AGARTALA, April 15 (TIWN): Skyrocketing prices of food items were observed since the morning in Agartala non-veg markets. Amid high rates of each item, there was no pause in the selling and business as after all it's Pohela Baishakh, a day dedicated for Bengali foodies. Broiler Chicken is sold at Rs. 180-250, Desi at Rs. 600, whereas mutton is Rs. 800-1000. The Hilsa Fish rate begins from Rs. 1200/- to Rs. 1500?-. This is the day when 99 % Bengalis aimed to satisfy their gluttony with delicious food items and taking the opportunity, the sellers also fix a heavy rate as per their wishes. From Gol Bazar to Math Chowmuhani, Battala, the prices are more or less same.

Battala market the prices of Hilsa recorded with Rs. 1000/- per kilo on April 11, whereas today is Rs. 12000 to Rs. 2000 as without Hilsa fish Bengalis' New Year celebrations are never satisfied.

It’s a part of the tradition for the businessmen that they close all their book of accounts and start a new one on the first day of the Bengali calendar. This is believed as a way of renewing and strengthening the business relationships with their customers and business partners.

The Pohela Boishakh is warmly and joyfully celebrated all over the state and to other countries and states who adopted the Bengali calendar. People celebrate the event with loud festivities and parades to the streets. Over time, the celebration, which had no religious connotation from the start, became an integral part of Bengali culture.  Bangla Nababarsha (Nôbobôrsho) is the first day of the Hindu Bengali calendar which is celebrated by the people of Bangladesh every 14th of April in the Gregorian calendar. New Year’s Day celebration is also known to the Bengali as Pohela Boishakh.  The tradition of the celebration of the first day of the Bengali calendar was introduced the Mughal Emperor when he reformed the calendar so that the collection of taxes would match up with the harvesting period.
