Water treatment plants shut off for the oil spill in Gomati river: Drinking water crisis hits the common people

Agartala, December 13 ( TIWN): Oil spill in Gomati river caused troubles for the common people. Most of the water treatment plants are shut off for safety purpose. Due to this, the people are facing acute crisis of water. Despite water tankers used, complaints of non-availability of drinking water are causing enormous suffering. The oil spill in the Gomati river begun last week. Engineers of TSECL (Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd) immediately rushed to the Gomati hydro electric project and stopped the oil leakage," The oil spill was again noticed Tuesday in the Gomati river.
The drinking water and sanitation (DWS) department closed down many water treatment plants in Gomati and Sepahijala districts,"

There are many water treatment plants in Amarpur, Udaipur sub-divisions under Gomati districts where water is supplied from Gomati river. The Gomati river along with seven other rivers in Tripura flows to Bangladesh. The 10 MW capacity Gomati hydel power project was commissioned in 1974.

Later talking to TIWN today, the Drinking Water & Sanitation (DWS) Chief Engineer B.K. Debbarma said that the watertankers have been placed at Udaipur, Amarpur, Jatanbari, Melagarh and Sonamura for the supply of drinking water. Asked about the recent condition of the water treatment plants, he said that the plants are undergoing regular testing and maintenance and it may take some couple of days more to resume supply of water. Earlier, talking to TIWN about the issue ONGC Asset Manager V.P. Mahawar said that getting an alarm of the oil spill in the river Gomati on Tuesday, ONGC had dispatched a chemist team to examine the oil spill. He further added that the ONGC had not drilled any well there in Gomati, therefore it needs to be examined.
