AGARTALA, December 3 (TIWN): Tripura CM Manik Sarkar had placed a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 1st regarding nine point charters of demand for the overall development of Tripura. But, interestingly all the nine demands will definitely help to increase the Melarmath party fund instead of the development of the people of the state. But, Mr. Sarkar did not mention to PM anything regarding the hundreds of crores smuggling of contraband items in huge amounts through the Indo-Bangladesh international border and nexus between smugglers and political parties. It is quite clear that Mr Sarkar did not want to tell anything to PM Modi regarding smuggling of contraband items through the Indo-Bangladesh international border. If the Transit/Transit-shipment facility is given it will definitely boost the smuggling of contraband items and the ruling party, corrupt officials will get a handsome commission from smugglers.

In the memorandum the fifth point was Indo-Bangladesh connectivity. In the memorandum it was written that for achieving rapid economic development in North-East Region, facility of movement of goods and people through Bangladesh to North-East and Eastern India is an earnest necessity. Therefore, there is an urgent need for Transit/Transit-shipment facility connecting North-East/ Eastern India through Chittagong and Ashuganj Ports in Bangladesh.

Most of the smugglers of the state are very close to Melarmath bosses, apart from closeness with other political parties, said sources.

In the name of development of the state so called Mr. Clean  is only trying to increase the CPI (M) party fund instead of thinking about the development of people of the state. The main motive of Manik Sarkar is to increase the party fund by hook or crook policy, said a highly placed source of Melarmath.

It is to be mentioned here that the smuggling of Phensedyl a cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine and other contraband items are increasing day by day in the state. The hands of police are also tied regarding the issue due to high level influence of the Melarmath. Phensedyl, Heroin, Ganja, Narcotics business in Tripura will easily cross over Rs.500 crores every year. Part of that narcotics money goes to party funds for police, political protection.

On the issue of narcotics, no amount of laws seems to be enough to reign in the production and distribution of banned substances. Tripura railways are also becoming a new pathway for the import and export of Phensedyl smuggling, said a highly placed police source.

Police often detain vehicles and seize thousands of bottles of Phensedyl consignments that are not used in Tripura. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The network is very deep-rooted and widespread. The Phensedyl smuggling would, in future, become a major deterrent to better Indo-Bangla relations, the police official said.

According to the source, hundreds of smugglers based in Tripura are sending spurious Phensedyl, a cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine and other drugs to Bangladesh virtually by the truckload, hundreds of acres of remote land in West Tripura have become sprawling ganja plantations.

Consumption of alcohol is banned in Muslim majority Bangladesh and thus the demand of alternative means like cough syrup is on the rise in the neighbouring country. Numerous smugglers of both sides of border are engaged in illegal trade of Phensedyl as it gives them huge income, the source added.

Large parts of Bangladesh and Myanmar are emerging as drug consuming zones, and bordering areas of Tripura are contributing to the fast-emerging drugs market, the source mentioned.

We are well aware of the situation and the police often detain vehicles and seize thousands of bottles of Phensedyl consignments that are not used in Tripura. But, this is just the tip of the iceberg. The network is very deep-rooted and widespread. The Phensedyl smuggling would, in future, become a major deterrent to better Indo-Bangla relations, the source further said.

One bottle of Phensedyl costs about Rs 90, but it is sold at Taka 600 or more in Bangladesh. The source added that complete fencing of Tripura’s 856km boundary with Bangladesh would prevent smuggling menace.
