AGARTALA, Nov 11 (TIWN): Protests were staged by MGNREGA workers at Belonia as they were offered to be paid Rs. 30 only by the GRS present there. A woman worker said that even after whole day's toil by cutting muds, they were said that they did not do Rs. 30 works. The Engineer on duty allegedly warned to remove all women MGNREGA workers from duty, which had escalated the protest. MGNREGA started by the then UPA Govt as an initiative to generate rural employment in states. Per day MGNREGA wage has been same for all. BJP in Tripura before Assembly Election 2018 promised to give Rs. 340 wage per mandays for any Govt work but after assuming power, it is trying to change the mode of payment in MGNREGA saying as per works, the wages will be given. In Belonia's Bharat Chandra Block located West Kalabaria area after whole days works, the workers were scolded by GRS Jayanta Kumar Das and said that the way, they have worked, they can't be paid Rs. 30 also. Then he measured an area, asking them to cut the total mud there by 1 day to get full wages.

This had generated massive resentment among the workers there who started massive protests. In many places, with machines works are being done by depriving workers to get works properly, when due to MGNREGA work crisis, statewide workless conditions have gripped. On the other side, Govt representative said that it is not fault of the GRS but if extra payments are given then that amount will be cut from GRS, appointed Engineer's salaries.
