AGARTALA, September 27 (TIWN): 13 percent of all the crimes occurring all over the state, involves traffic mismanagement leading to road accidents and loss of lives, revealed the Powerpoint presentation (PPT), displayed at a review meeting, yesterday, at state Secretariat.

A sharp rise of 70 % has been observed in the number of two, three and four wheelers in last four years (2010-2014) all over the state Tripura. 517 street accidents have claimed 124 lives ( 15 persons per month) apart from leaving 922 ones injured in the current year’s January to August month  only. Out of 517 accidents, 129 were attributed to the unwanted need for speed of the bikers across the state (which accounts for 25 % of all the street accidents).

Meanwhile, the same is proving to be a convenient source of revenue collection for the authority as a hefty Rs. 1.10 crore has been collected from January to August of this year (which amounts to nearly 14 lakh per day, if also the ‘unauthorized receipts’ are taken into consideration). However, 27 highway mobile patrolling are operational in the state for providing assistance and relief in case of any accidents on the busy highways. The traffic department is well equipped with state of the art speed control devices and more devices will be handed over to them for the combating the same. Furthermore, directions have been given in the meeting for identifying the accident prone areas in Agartala and all the districts. In this regard, the Chief Minister has asked the Chief Secretary to form a task force involving the Police Supers and the Public Works Department (PWD) which will work towards developing the roads of accident prone areas apart from straightening the turns on the concerned roads. Besides, specialized Traffic Action Plan for traffic management at all the district and sub-division Sadar, will also be ensured, soon.
