Death of a patient turned RGM hospital into battlefield at Kailasahar

KAILASHAHAR, September 24 (TIWN): Death of a patient turned the Kailashar Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Hospital (RGM) into a battlefield. Following the death of a patient namely Atik Mia of Srinathpur, an irate mob of relatives and villagers of Srinathpur ransacked Rajiv Gandhi hospital ,located in the heart of the town, ambulance and damaged emergency ward , glass pans of surgical wards , doctors quarters and also destroyed important official documents related to patients record on Wednesday . The police rushed to the hospital failed to control the mob and one moment they too became mute spectators only. Later a large contingent of police led by Nabadwip Jamatia ADDL. SP of Unakoti district rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

According to reports,  Atik Mia , 28 , a police personnel  was admitted in the hospital with severe heart problem in the morning at around 8.30 am  and succumbed  death within 15 minutes after admission. Relatives lodged an FIR at Kailashahar police station against the three doctors on charges of negligence in treatment . Sources of RGM hospital denied the charges and said that before the treatment he succumbed. Further he said doctors along with Medical super of District hospital are going to lodge FIR at Kailashahar police station separately. He also on behalf of doctors warned that if the culprits associated with the ransacking of government properties are not dealt drastically, they might go for strike.

Duty Doctor Dr.Sneha Sen observed the critical condition of the patient,  called two specialists Dr.B.K.Debbarma and Dr. B.P.Mishra. The doctors took 15 mins to come. In the meantime Atik expired.

Immediately after that 40 -45 boys from Melaghar arrives there and started vandalism in the hospital. They had destroyed the Emergency ward, Surgical Ward, Doctor/Nurses room, Food Trolley for patients and Sister’s room. Thereafter they went to the doctor’s quarter and destroyed the property of Dr. S.Mishra, Dr. S.Paul and Dr. D. Bhadra. Additional Superintendent of Police and Additional District Magistrate rushed there and tackled the situation.

According to the police,”We are less in number and so no proper action had been taken. At the spot. However case and counter case had been registered. On the other hand Hospital Superintendent Keshab Sen Laskar told that the incidents have been taken into the notice of higher authority. Action should be taken to stop this type of incidents in future.
