Sensational triple murder case: Age saves Sushil from capital punishment, court awarded life term imprisonment

AGARTALA, July 17 (TIWN): Considering the age of Sushil Chowdhury, the Additional District and Sessions Judge (West)- Kripankar Chakraborty today declared the verdict of triple murder case sentencing the convict to life term imprisonment until death under section 302, 120(B), 109, 111/113, 34 and 201 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for masterminding the triple murder case. The court also fined him Rs 50000, 10000 and 5000.

Though the prosecution team sought for capital punishment marking the incident as ‘rare of rarest’ but the court considering the age of convict Sushil sentenced him to life term imprisonment.

After the announcement of verdict, standing on the witness box Sushil said to court,” Still I could not trace who is the actual offender of triple murder case”. This verdict has defeated all other judgments of the world, said Sushil while he was taken to the jail after the announcement of verdict.

On being asked about the reaction of verdict, a lawyer of defence team said that they are not happy with the verdict. “We will move to High Court as early as possible”, added the lawyer.

While addressing the media, Special PP Dilip Sarkar, who moved the case in favour of the government said, “We are very much satisfied with the judgment”.

A vast number of people were eagerly waiting for the verdict at court premises since morning whether Sushil will get capital punishment or life term. Later, the court finally started the announcing judgment at 11.00 am. To handle the gathering, tight security had been deployed in the court premises from the police department as Sushil was slapped by an unknown person from the gathering on July 14.

Though a section of angry people today also tried to attack Sushil amidst huge gathering but the police personals managed the situation very dynamically.

The 75-year-old Sushil Chowdhury, editor-cum-owner of Dainik Ganadoot newspaper was found guilty into triple murder case on July 14. On the same day, the turned approver of the case- Niyati Ghosh was acquitted by the court.

In a dreadful incident, three innocent non-journalist employees of Dainik Ganadoot newspaper Ranjit Chowdhury (Manager), Sujit Bhattacharjee (Proof-reader) and Balaram Ghosh (Driver) were brutally killed in broad daylight in office premises at Capital Complex, the heart of city on May 19, last year. The incident had rocked the city triggering panic among the city dwellers.

After a year-long trial, the Additional District and Sessions Court today awarded life term imprisonment to the main culprit of triple murder case- Sushil Chowdhury. Now he has to suffer life-long behind the bars.
