Woman convicted for killing her sister-in-law

UDAIPUR, July 4 (TIWN): District & Session Judge Asish Pal on Friday convicted a woman for her alleged involvement in the murder of her sister-in-law by setting fire on her body at dawn(at 3.30am) on 1st June 2011. The incident took place in Mirza under Kakraban Police Station where one Sefali Ghanta forcibly set fire on Saraswati Debnath(Ghanta) , W/O- Mantush Ghanta . Sefali and Saraswati were sisters-in-law.

    It is learnt that in the year 2010 Saraswati Debnath, D/O- Basudeb Debnath of Fotamati area got married with Mantush Ghanta. Soon after her marriage Saraswati discovered that her husband Mantush was having an illegal affair with Sefali,the wife of his elder brother . However, Saraswati tried to keep her husband at bay from Sefali but all her efforts were in vain. Couple of times Mantush faced social trial but the illegal relation still continued. Then on 1st June 2011 Mantush and Sefali made a cruel plan and set fire on Saraswati Ghanta by pouring Kerosine oil to her clothes.  It was 3.30am and in critical condition Saraswati was brought to Tripura Sundari District Hospital, Udaipur. After struggling for more than two weeks Saraswati succumbed to her injuries in the G B Hospital on 19th June, 2011.

      Meanwhile Saraswati's father Basudeb Debnath lodged a complaint in the Kakraban Police Station on 1st June (Case no-66/2011) under Section 302/34 of IPC. Immediately Kakraban police started its investigation and arrested Sefali and Mantush. After going through the investigation Investigating Officer Ajit Debnath (Sub Inspector) submitted his chargesheet. During the long trial District & Session Judge Asish Pal recorded the statement of 16 witnesses. On Friday the Magistrate convicted Sefali Ghanta of the case and sentenced her to six years of imprisonment. The Magistrate also imposed a penalty of Rs-1000/- and six moths more imprisonment due to non-payment of penalty. However, Saraswati's husband Mantush was acquitted of the case due to lack of evidence.
