AGARTALA, March 4 (TIWN): Despite of several initiatives taken to curb down smuggling of liquor in the state, intrusion of foreign liquors goes rampant in the state.
Reportedly, Tripura police on Friday produce two accused drivers of smuggling foreign liquor before the court.
According to the police report, both the truck drivers were arrested with around Rs. 2.50 lakhs of foreign liquor.
Speaking about the details, it has been mentioned that altogether 112 cartons of foreign liquors has been seized along with the truck bearing registration number TR01-F-1847 on Thursday late night.
The accused has been identified as Uttam Debnath (38) and Mahabir Dey (30) are arrested while transporting the smuggled items to Bishalgarh.
According to the police sources, the truck loaded with foreign liquor was coming from Assam and heading towards Bishalgarh.
According to the source, hundreds of smugglers based in Tripura are sending spurious Phensedyl, a cough syrup, with an exceedingly high dose of codeine and other drugs to Bangladesh. Besides, numbers of smugglers are engaged in both the sides of the border in smuggling illegal Phensedyl and liquor.
However, it is to be mentioned here that State police often detains vehicles and seize thousands of bottles of Phensedyl consignments and illegal liquors that are legally imported. But, the network is very deep-rooted and widespread.
On the other hand, smuggling through Indo-Border area is also rampant and highly leaky making the illegal movement of smugglers and goods a regular affair.
Besides, the territory and the demographic composition of the border area make it favourable for Bangladeshis to sneak into India and also to get easily assimilated with the local masses.
